One of the reasons why Canada's identity is not strong is that it has employed the "cultural mosaic" approach rather than the melting pot. Often, people groups come to Canada, bringing their families later on when it's affordable, and settling in but retaining their roots. I have no problem with this, but if you don't come from an immigrant family, or it's been many generations since your family arrived unless you are native, then you are just a dull Canadian citizen, a little sister/brother to the USA. It's actually depressing how inconsequential our "identity' is, it's practically non-existent. The most pride I ever felt as a Canadian was when the truck convoy incident took place, and as a people, we were united during that short but monumental week.

That’s some great insight into why there isn’t a strong national identity in Canada. And it has made me think that I do think of the US as having lots of personalities local to areas of the country so it is possible to have a varied cultural identity for one country. It’s all about what you see.

Also interesting when countries form sub-genres as a way to narrate their national history. Like “Westerns” becoming popular in US 20th century to picture the settling of the land and highlight things like manifest destiny’s influence in modern times. Most fascinating example I think is nuclear kaiju (Godzilla) movies in Japan starting post-WW2. Arguably a way to confront Hiroshima and Nagasaki, particularly a means to create catharsis. Stories where a giant nuclear beast topples cities, but through creativity and collaboration the, countrymen are able fight it off

Yes! The actual period of the wild west was only around 30 years, but its legacy in cinema makes it seem like a hundred. Yeah, the symbolism in Godzilla coming from the sea and destroying cities is a strong one. I wonder how it feels now that Godzilla has been commodified in the west.

I'm in America but I've also been thinking about this from a state/ local perspective, because even though Hollywood is such a huge force in American culture most mainstream films take place in the same 3 to 5 cities. And even if they don't, the city itself in the film could just be Toronto or some backlot in LA. Of course the indie film scene is different, and The Florida Project comes to mind since it was shot in Orlando, and a lot of locals have praised the film for tapping into the local culture. I don't really have a solid answer for what defines "national cinema" at this point in time, but I think the vibes and aesthetics of the film are a huge part of the reason that a nation (or even a state in the US) can claim a film, whether it was entirely filmed there by a local filmmaker or not. Oh btw my favorite Scottish film is probably Trainspotting. It's been so long since I've seen Braveheart but it's about time that I give it another watch lol

That's really fascinating, I hadn't thought of it from a state perspective, and feeling like only a certain part of your country is represented. Trainspotting is a classic ❤️

My favourite Scottish film is The Wicker Man! There’s a real lack of genre in Scottish cinema. We don’t really see much outside gritty drama. Even in the independent scene, the only films that really get funding are ones about social issues or driven by a message when there are scottish sci-fi and horror movies that aren’t given any chance of getting funded unless it’s crowdfunded. Why are we not embracing scottish myths, legends, folklore, it’s a goldmine of source material.

I forgot about the wicker man! Its a classic. It would be so great to see more variety. I’d live some surreal thrillers!

❤ another excellent post, there are so many brilliant Scottish films it's hard to pick one but I think Angel's Share is my favourite. Again though, it shows the real downside to being Scottish. We need a happy Scottish film. ❤

Recently started entering another student film into some festivals again and I've started to have similar feelings about how expensive the whole process is (I even make a joke with my friends about how it's like gambling at some point). But this time around, kind of similar to your strategy, I just decided to apply to a few domestic/ local fests and see if I get in that way. Another scam that I keep seeing is that the festival constantly pushes back the deadline wayyyyy over the time that the festival was originally scheduled to take place.
@Cinorafilms
@Cinorafilms Ай бұрын
You’re right, it almost is gambling! And yeah, if they keep pushing the deadline past when the festival should have run then there likely is no festival. I actually became aware of another scam recently - where you are selected and there is a physical event but not all selected films are showing. You have to buy a ticket to the screening and show up to find out if your film is playing.

This video was incredibly helpful! I'm in the US and have always wanted to attend a major festival and had no idea that the top three in Europe had an application process for some filmmaker passes. I wonder if there's a similar process for some of the fests over here... appreciate you breaking down and demystifying the process!

Call me crazy but AI could be used to bash out a rough first draft and then we could painstakingly rewrite it ourselves?

Great video Ash, really enjoyed it and, although it's all a wee bit depressing in the industry right now, tenacity is what'll get us through! Keep up the good work and I look forward to watching your first Feature! As well as being a VO and Presenter, which is challenging in itself, we rent out our house in Berkshire for film shoots and that's been slow since last Summer. We love it so hoping it's going to pick up soon but it's a good way to monitor what state the industry is in. We had a Scout round last week for a Feature so maybe, just maybe, things are looking up!
