Rolex makes about 1 million watches per year, while Omega makes half a million. Why would I want to jump all the hoops to buy something which made double the numbers of a competitor? Not to mention the secondary market where many of their watches are being traded at a discount in immaculate condition.

What does race have anything to do with watches? What do you mean a black watch collector? Am I a white watch collector? Or are we just collectors?
@WatchClyde
@WatchClyde Сағат бұрын
Someone’s race has a lot to do with watch collecting, given the climate of our country and what access to luxury pieces mean for certain people. Race intersects with every industry and sector whether we like it or not. The vast majority of wealth held in this country is not centralized in the hands of Black people, what they can purchase and what they can own limits their access in watch collecting. So to answer your question - Yes, you are a White watch collector if you are a White person. I’m a Black watch collector because I’m a Black person. I’m highlighting the sub-category to watch collectors. However, HOW we collect, WHAT we can afford to collect HOW access information on collecting, HOW we experience ADs in the collecting process and the details around our collections can be defined by our racial identities and that can’t be disputed.

@@FlockaWaka there’s people out there that view the watch community as snobby and privileged as I mentioned in the video. A good example for you to understand I think would be the stigma that Country Clubs had which has historically been known to be for the privileged individual’s (whites) and blacks weren’t welcome. Therefore making minorities hesitant or uncomfortable to partake even after they were welcomed…I think a lot of people forgot where we’ve come from as a country, it’s not too long ago.

If you like Rolex I think now is a good time to shop for one. I like Rolex but would never use that type of money on a watch. Rolex is for people who seek to uplift their image. Its not necessarily a good value for your money. But you should buy what you like and enjoy. I like all mechanical watches. I just don't need a Rolex.

I am old so I like the old watches. My watches are mostly between 34 and 39 mm. Mostly 35 and 36 mm. The rule is that you buy and wear what you like. My wife likes large watches. Over 40 mm. She likes watches I would never wear. I give her all of my mistakes and she loves them. Its a too each his own hobby.

Love this topic, there are so many rules of thumb but the main thing is don’t pay monthly for it, even if it’s 0% interest.. I did and regretted it. Buy with cash only and never let the luxury purchases exceed more than 5% of your savings

My wife bought me a Rolex for putting her through college. I paid off her tuition,rent and expenses. When she graduated I was given a Rolex as a thank you gift. I believe the watch was $3,200 at the time and our combined income was over $200,000. We paid cash for the watch and had savings of about $100,000. We lived frugally in a 2 bedroom apartment and saved most of our incomes for three years to purchase our first house. I gave my daughter a datejust for college graduation and my son a submariner for his graduation.

I have known many people that buy items on credit because they only care about their image. People that use credit to buy luxury goods are not rich or wealthy. If you want to be wealthy you must be wise with your money. Save your money. Use credit only when it is necessary. Not to fund luxury or day to day purchases. No one cares what watch you are wearing. I don't use money that way. My attitude has served me well. I know where to buy replica watches of very good quality if I want to spend money on image. I don't even do that. Luxury watches are a poor investment. Always keep that fact in the back of your mind before you make a purchase of that caliber.

I used to work for a pawn shop in the early 80s. I was amazed at the way people manage their finances. People get into a cycle of purchasing expensive items. Then bringing them into the pawn shop. Then they return for months on end paying interest. They get the items back. Then they bring the items back to the pawn shop. Until eventually then lose the items to the pawn shop. Then the pawn shop eventually sells off the items. Its a vicious circle. After leaving that job I promised myself that I would never buy or sell anything to a pawn shop and I have kept that promise to myself. Its a dirty business.

The original design was to be a 24hour watch first. Originally you could not even change the hour hand. I think they should have kept this as a 3 hand watch with the hour hand only going around once per 24 hrs. That would have been pretty unique.

Ok so I haven’t commented on the hodinkee stuff but I just found your channel and liked it. So here’s my thoughts for the algorithm. Hodinkee lost its way before it went down the watch sales toilet. I remember a friend signing up for their INSANELY over priced magazine. They were shilling some $100 baseball cap at one point as well as wildly overpriced tote bags. Hodinkee always had great content but they were way way to invested in the wealthiest watch collectors. The kind of people who bought not one Rolex to celebrate a milestone, but collected Rolex watches as a fun pass time. That said, I think hodinkee can return if they take a 3 legged stool approach driven by a love for watches: 1. Editorial first and always. Hodinkee needs to keep producing great content AND needs to make sure they cover watches up and down the price spectrum. There is a core watch community that will read content about a $3m Patek (myself included) but most people want to read about watches they could someday own. Narrative content should also be a staple. Limited editions: YEP! I still think hodinkee should sell watches. Just ALOT LESS of them. Hodinkee should do a quarterly collaboration with 3/4 watches per year being in the $2k and under zone. Once a year, do a big collab with a higher price tag. They can let all collectors in on this and you could theoretically get a whole collection after 1 year just from Hodinkee collabs without burning people out. Video content: more talking watches, more “onsite” dives, more travel to manufactures. Lots and lots of video. Short form video content is just a must now. No excuse. That would be my start to a recover.

I think your idea of finding interest in non hyped watches is a sound advice and makes for a more interesting watch journey. I have been collecting for a while now and I do have one tip I would love to give myself back at the beginning. That would be not to keep buying very similar watches. At one point I had five dive watches all with a black dial and inevitably you just end up grabbing the favourite one every time. I think it's better to challenge yourself with different sizes and styles. Enjoy your content Clyde. Keep up the good work.
