Early on the car following the milk wagon is not a Wolsey or a Riley, it’s a Rover P4., the Ford garage was Norburys originally.

THis is brilliant. Like the others commenting i grew up in NOrton from 1971 to 1990. From memory the people on the bypass was a sponsored walk that we did just before it opened. Keep up the good nostalgic work.

See in the photo your grandfather has one of those leather cartridge case straps over his shoulder, the men that served on the big howitzer guns wore them. I have photo of my grandfather with one on. May be your grandfather was on the guns first.

Great video! So much in it. We were still having milk collected in churns hear in cornwall back in 1970. I was only eight then, cows had to be milked early and churns out on the stand so you didn’t miss the lorry! Everyone had what looked like a sack trolly to move churns around the yard, you can still see some of the old churn stands at end of farm lanes today. Great footage of flying Scotsman 👌

Love it! I was a great fan of bypass construction projects in my youth, around the time of this home movie; and seeing Malton before the bypass brought back memories of clogged streets full of traffic, entirely normal for places such as Kington on the way into Wales, bypassed around 1977. It is wonderful that recordings such as this exist, and generous of you to post for the benefit of those of us who like to be reminded of our social history. Thank you for sharing this

I find very interesting seeing certain old videos especially ones that are local was fair capped when I first saw this as I was certain it was the bypass being done there’s a few other clips I can’t just recognise that other locals can spot straight away which helps.

Thanks for posting this. As a little lad in Malton I watched it being constructed. I used to walk beside a lovely little stream off Rainbow Lane. I sat there as a Dowsetts grader ran through it and the stream was no more. That act of vandalism has stayed with me to this day. I’d have been about 8 then, 55 now but still remember it. Malton was a ghost town in the 70s the bypass ruined it for years… Do you have any footage of the 1970s pram faces….?

Ive never known Malton with out a bypass & have never really thought much about what was there before, sounds like there was some nice scenery. When you look at the link to the Ryedale page it sounds like it took some time get it passed through the motions so there must have been some opposition to it. Yes i do have some footage of the pram race along with other bits of Malton from that era see link below. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/jMxgo6aHmMDHe5s.html

This is great Robbie! More footage of these engines. There are a pair of these engines in the east anglia rural museum and this pair are the privately owned ones I assume. Sadly i left my camera on the IH stand & my phone went flat on the saturday when they got the bad one start and run on its own power it sounded like an amazing dum beat that kept perfect timing, i tried to recreate it editing the video bit 3.24 & 3.26 and looping it over & over a few times but just couldn't get it to sound right. if you've got a good imagination you might be able hear it just off them short few seconds.
