Knee bars are definitely cheating in a white belt division. For blue belt one could make the argument, that it should be allowed. But some places only brown and black belts are allowed to knee bar 👓👓

In my opinion everyone can climb however the f they want and feel most comfortable with as long as they don’t brag about climbing a grade while actually using tons of supports 🤷‍♂️

Knee pad is aid

Discouraging PPE is always wrong change my mind. Do grades vary depending on what shoes you wear? How heavy/how much chalk you brought? What clothes you wear? Is shirtless a downgrade? Is using a mat a downgrade?

If you climb with chalk you cannot claim the same grade. It's aid. Same with climbing shoes. And if you go in summer when it is warm, again, you cannot claim the grade.

How can it be cheating if its possible with or without it? It protects your skin. Same as shoes or gloves. I use knee sleeves when i climb indoor tho I think the kneepads are stiff and probably help alot more. Like barefoot/no chalk is better on dual tex. I guarentee you a toe hook would be horribly painful if it wasnt for shoes

a downgrade depends on the route, some are not really easier some are 2 grades easier

so if the first ascent is done barefoot, then any climb with shoes is cheating ig. why is a kneepad any different than climbing shoes? its just there to make you climb better, just like climbing shoes

What even is there to argue about? Deciding whether it's cheating or not is up to everyone's own opinion, and nobody should force that opinion on others. As for claiming the same grade when it makes it significantly easier, who cares? They are just lying to themselves, they aren't impressing anyone. Plus, grades are super subjective and dumb anyways.

I use the montura vertigo 2. its thicker at the knees and ya dont need a pad if you can tolerate some pain.

The way i look at it is that it is the same grade. Its just that grade with knee pad aid. Just like doing something thats normally trad as top rope is top rope aid of that. The grade is the same but that doesn’t mean its the same difficulty, thats what the aid thats named tells you

Yeah I feel like doing a route in better style is almost more important than pushing the grade. Like it would be way more badass to see someone do Silence 9c carrying the biners than a new 9c+ in the same style.
