this is cool. I bought an inverter hat is designed to work on three Milwaukee OR DeWalt batteries , made by miller tech. so it allows you to use 120 v things off of your batteries which is nice especially if you are like me and do not have many 12v camping things. when I go camping I take just regular stuff with me that plugs into a wall outlet. of course the amount of juice these batteries hold is not enough to handle really big stuff but I tested it out with my shop vac and it ran it on high for about 20 minutes which is actually pretty impressive considering its a full size shop vac. I wouldn't use it for that of course but for running lights or a fan, charging stuff ect it works pretty well. it was $300 bucks though

As a Milwaukee fan, you caught my eye. As a controls and automation designer, I have a few observations. One is that your heat sink is enclosed, so when the cover is closed, it really is a battery heater. Note that you have wiring resting on the heater. Second, Batteries in Parallel cannot be successfully charged simultaneously, with a single charger. Third, since these are lithium batteries, a fire is a realistic possibility but I see no Individual Isolating Diodes on each battery. Thus, a voltage reduction, in any cell, will result in that fault drawing on the good batteries, potentially at a sufficiently high current, to cause a lithium cell fire, which would turn the entire device into an incendiary problem. It's a valid concept with a marginal circuit design which makes the odds of a fire a non zero number.

Hi there, just wondering if it’s possible to get one of the small diesel heaters that would already be assembled? And do you post to Ireland? 🇮🇪

So much wring with this. No fuse protection, no battery protection. This is a cool idea but not nearly good enough to post on youtube in my opinion.

Thanks for taking the time for the video. I question the 3d printed fuel pump holder? Isn’t that just a receipt to amplify the already load pump. Mounting it to a hard plastic holder then mounted to the case? Secondly I question having the exhaust and intake so close together, even though different sides of the case. I have found multiple occasions a slight breeze can blow exhaust around the case and drawn into the intake. Thirdly? No muffler? Wow that’s a huge mistake

Since I don't see anyone doing it so I've been passing on the info. I made a true all in one diesel heater using a Ridgid medium size box. Inside I placed the heater, 20ah LFP battery, solar controller, AC to DC charger, cooling fan, light, voltage monitor, USB, 12v socket, charging port, and a 5 liter fuel tank with quick disconnect fuel hose. I just started building another case using the Apache 4800 case. I'm keeping this one simple. I placed the heater with a 50ah LFP battery. I still had room for the controller, 12v socket, and voltage monitor. To keep it clean. I mounted a small external case for the fuel pump and the filter. I just started making extendable legs for the case.

Just got my parts of the mail from you, do you have any advice on how to make the fuel pump quieter. The 3d printed fuel pump mount being hard plastic really resonates the noise.
@keeganbuilds
@keeganbuilds 5 ай бұрын
You can add sound deadening material or rubber between the pump and the case and even wedge some into the pump mount itself.

Nice works mate! I've built a couple similar power station variations. Something to look out for is the 24v to 12v converter you are using. This has a high guage wire (14 AWG?). So if you have multiple devices plugged in, e.g. a camping fridge and some lights. It will drop below 12v as the wire can't handle the current. This will be more noticeable when you use the long extension cable. if you want a consistent 12v you will need to modify the converter with a lower guage wire. Also, is if you have multiple batteries in parallel. It's best to use some Schottky diode to stop reverse current flowing from one battery to another. If all batteries are fully charged. This step will save your batteries.

Is there a reason why people are installing a heater in a plastic box, when you can just buy one that's installed much better for less money that actually looks and works good! Why would you try to suck the warm intake air from inside the box with the lid closed or do you run with it open? Either way, you shouldn't use inside warm air for the burn chamber. Outside air being colder and more dense ignites better, and you really don't want to be using warm air and blowing it outside.

Yes it will work with any of the 5kw heaters. Just double check that you have a 75mm output on the heat side and you should be good to go.

You should really add diodes to the wiring so the batteries aren't back feeding each other. It will function the same, but if one battery loses capacity, the other batteries will be trying to charge into the diminishing one. A diode on each battery would prevent that.

Is it possible to lay this set up on its side? Or must it be vertical?
@keeganbuilds
@keeganbuilds 6 ай бұрын
it can be in its side. You just really need to watch out for the fuel tank lid. That is the only thing that must remain vertical because of the vent in the fuel lid could leak.

What a great video and it's the one I'm going to follow when I build mine. One question though why put the thermostat in the case? Surely you want that in whatever space you're heating?
@keeganbuilds
@keeganbuilds 7 ай бұрын
I find that these thermostats are very ineffective. They heat your room at full blast until gets to temp and then essentially shut down. I find putting in “Hertz” mode you can essentially keep a constant low/medium or high based on your needs with the wireless remote from your tent.

DO NOT!!! use the “dryer” type hose for a regular install, it’s fine for this because it’s so short. On a regular install it’s too flimsy when the heater is running, ask me how I know… Thought it was a good idea for a tight area install and it was until I turned on the heater and the hose got hot… bad idea.
@keeganbuilds
@keeganbuilds 7 ай бұрын
Great call out! I would also point out that if you are using dryer vent hose for your outlet, you can use a bit of the flexible piping that comes with these heaters to give yourself a heat buffer. Maybe cut yourself a 1 ft section and have that go between your heater and dryer vent tubing.

I purchased his 3D printed parts and found them to be high quality that have been measured with precision and fit perfectly. You have to appreciate Keegan's attention to detail. since the m18 does not have an onboard BMS you could attempt to use some sort of MPPT charge controller but you would need to make sure you can select the proper cut off voltage when full. This may prove to be difficult but could work.
