Paul Johnson, whether you agreed with his Conservative politics or not, never wrote a bad sentence; they are quite simply impeccable. He is one of those writers, like David Remnick and Patrick Radden Keefe, that one reads whatever the subject happens to be. They make your effort worthwhile, always.--Kevin Whelan

Stopped at the most interesting part , plus the first 3 minutes of a ten minute clip was useless . Would also like to have heard about the Berlin / Baghdad railway , begun in the late 1800’s … and strangely almost complete when WW1 broke out … co incidence ?

Five yr later: Has anyone in the comment section read “invisible”? Can i t possibly be found at Barnes & Noble, and at what price? I’m a senior and practically home bound, but have read three of his fictional novels and find SLC to be a brilliant author. Wd love to purchase his non-fiction “invisible “.

Nixon said that the press were the enemies, but the truth is that Nixon was the enemy. He wanted to be king, just like the orange sociopath who was the last resident of the White House. The press is NOT the enemy. The press -- the Fourth Estate -- is a vital part of our democracy.

Well, (to quote Ronald Reagan) bookstores are not dying off or dying out, but almost re-proliferating. The reason Why? People such as John Lukacs, and his readers. A tiny minority indeed, but a critical mass all the same RIP

To my fellow guys, im sure this must be affirming to hear one feminist opinion on men, but if you truly want to understand gender issues and womens struggles i would challenge you to immerse yourselves in more feminist though. There are a broad spectrum of sociological studies, experiences and opinions about mens and womens behavior. Ive seen the best of what men can be, but ive seen far more bad male behavior than female behavior, with the consequences of the mens behavior often being covered up or downplayed. Perspective is not tunnel vision, expand your viewpoint to find some of the dark truths that are under the surface of our conditioned behavior.
