What an awesome and unique interpretation, this has to be my favourite version of this concerto! There used to be another video recording of Sol Gabetta playing this piece with the Frankfurt Radio Orchestra, but it seems to be lost. If anybody has it, please tell me! I really hope I find it again one day...

I feel like perhaps the most difficult part of this concerto would be memorizing it.
@ColeDavis1234
@ColeDavis1234 9 ай бұрын
Believe me there are so many more things in this that make it just so much harder than anything else. There's a reason many people consider it to be one of in not the hardest piece to play ever written for cello. I agree on the memorization part though. There's a reason Yo Yo Ma plays it with the sheet music.

Des émotions jusqu'à la chair de poule chez Sol Gabetta : des expressions appropriées jusqu'a grotesques chez le chef. Chostakovich nous laisse en plein désarroi souvent !

Do you know what happened to the video of you playing this piece with the frankfurt radio symphony?
@karespratt5131
@karespratt5131 11 ай бұрын
It got taken down by them unfortunately because Frankfurt Radio Symphony Orchestra’s contract of online rights with her expired I’ve been told. It’s really unfortunate because I think that was the best interpretation of this piece

In a Shostakovich cello concerto the horn is almost like a second soloist, the pieces would fall apart without their strong presence, and unfortunately one of the horns was not fully involved... maybe the orchestra didn't have much time to prepare. But the soloist is incredible her sensibility is somehow even better than in her other recordings available. Sol Gabetta you made me fall in love with the cello ❤️

I totally agree. Parts of the orchestra seem a bit under-rehearsed to me. Not a good match for Sol Gabetta's fantastic playing.

Still, I love any concerto with two harps always playing in unison. This piece is the perfect introduction to late Shostakovich: totally pessimistic, but not suicidally so. (PS. For me, Heinrich Schiff with Maxim S. is the reference performance.)

Feels like somebody's forcing you to weep all the time. Suffering is everywhere. But where is the sorrow? How will you heal from all the wounds and purify your emotional traumas? You try to remember what was a thin beacon of light like while surrounded by this utter bottomless darkness. The search will go on but can you find it eventually?

@user-klavier -- “They are not long, the weeping and the Laughter, Love, Desire, Hate; I think they have no portion in us After We reach The Gate. They are not long, the Days of Wine and Roses, Out of a misty dream our path emerges for a while and then Closes Within a dream….” [Cheers from Acapulco]

@@IvanGreindl -- It's easy....Haven't you ever driven a hearse to the wholesale liverwurst outlet when suddenly a hermaphrodite in a piano truck backs out of a crackhouse driveway and, as your shoes catch fire, pirouetting across Ricardo Montalbán Boulevard, slapping the truck driver six times in the loins with a Chattanooga road map, even though he was only humming "The Pussycat Song" ?? Good....so now you get it!
