My father was from Big Stone Gap, and both his father's and mother's sides of the family settled in Wise Co, mostly from Hancock Co, TN, around the time of the events youre describing. They settled there to work the coal mines, but mine accidents forced both my grandfather and great grandfather into early retirement. My gr grandfather became paralyzed from an accident and died not long afterwards. My grandfather's back was broken from a rock fall, from what I understand, and recieved a settlement from the coal company, and spent the rest of his life in BSG, pursuing various financial oppurtunities
