Hi Ariel, thanks for the question. Best to check REDcycle's website for what they accept: www.redcycle.net.au/what-to-redcycle/. If they do not accept these items, I'm afraid they would have to go to landfill. I would suggest getting in touch with the brands and encouraging them to sign up for the Australasian Recycling Label, which provides clear instructions on what to do with each component of packaging. You can find more information on the ARL at recyclingnearyou.com.au/arl/. Hope that helps!

Is there a list or infographic or some sort of spreadsheet possibly with pictures or detailed information that can show us what items can be recycled and what cannot. For example tofu packaging or frozen vegetable packaging in my use case scenario.. can it be recycled or not. Would love to put a huge poster (that is the word I am looking for) on my fridge or kitchen somewhere so that we have a reference guide or sheet to look at when sorting rubbish between recyclables and general waste garbage. For example cardboard is normally recyclable but if it has a waxed surfaced or certain chemicals on it then it is not recyclable. Thanks. A link or some sort of resource would be great. Cheers thanks. Your Friendly Australian Environmentally Conscious Neighbour.

Sadly, this service will only take genuine cartridges as it's sponsored by the printer manufacturers. No mention is made of the non genuine cartridges and if you only give them non genuine, they then refuse to collect.
@planetarktv
@planetarktv 8 жыл бұрын
Hi Jeff and thank you for your comment. Any printer cartridge placed in a 'Cartridges 4 Planet Ark' box will be recycled. If you are applying to have a box provided for your workplace - then we ask that the majority of the cartridges placed in those boxes come from a participating manufacturer. The participating manufacturers are taking responsibility by paying for the collection, transportion, sorting and recycling of all the cartridges collected. Non genuine brands do not contribute in any way to the program. Planet Ark is successfully working with Brother, Canon, Epson, HP, Konica Minolta and Kyocera to collectively take responsibility for the end life of their products. This voluntary Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) program is one of the most successful of its type in the world. For more information visit: cartridges.planetark.org/about/

Thank you, whilst what you say is true, the manufacturers have a vested interest in removing perfectly good cartridges from the available pool to have them re-used rather than recycled. Recycling is only one step above landfill. The re-using industry has approached Planet Ark on numerous occasions to assist with recycling cartridges that cannot be re-used anymore and have had no success. If the re-use industry was to deliver cartridges to the facility for processing, and cover the costs of processing, would Planet-Ark help facilitate this. After all, no plastics in landfill is a wonderful thing.

Thanks again for your comments. It would be great for the re-use industry to contribute to the cost of collecting and processing their excess material. It would be best to get in touch with our resource recovery partner, Close the Loop who handles the collection and recycling via email [email protected] or phone 1800 242 473.

in response to newt1610 comment. a tree will eventually let out all the carbon it stores when it decomposes. by storing carbon in furniture (or similar) and replacing the tree it came from with another tree, we increase the amount of carbon stored. The question you ask your self shouldnt be which building material is best for the environment, the question is what type of timber is best.

If you don't cut down the tree to start with it will become senescent and eventually emit carbon back into the atmosphere. Storing that wood as furniture, flooring or structural timber creates a carbon sink while the regeneration process continues locking up more carbon from the atmosphere. Or you could purchase a steel or aluminum product that is completely unsustainable and emits severe amounts of carbon during its manufacture.

Isn't this encouraging people to throw out records willy-nilly without regard to proper disposal schedules? Where is the encouragement to discuss it with the Records Manager to ensure this is done (if at all) in a responsible manner.

This is simplistic peudo-environmentalism... most logging claims to be 'sustainable' yet is devestating to our biodiversity, and when logging includes a burn cycle a heck of a lot of of carbon is roasted out of the soil too, meaning much more greenhouse pollution, current logging in Australia is anything but sustainable and our post-logging burns are severe, so it would've been great to have had a look at some of the research from ANU before circulating this !!
