I suffered climber elbow almost 2 years trying different porcedures. The key are excentric excercises. The weight should be constantly increased as long as it doesnt agrravate the tendon. I'm finally pain free reaching 15kg dumbell for 8-10 reps. 3kg dumbells are good for warmup or really early rehab. Such light weights are usless long term. 100 reps with 2kg dumbell doesnt prepere tendon to single hard moves on boulders.

That's a great informative video and well researched i would say. I had took up climbing few months back and had been experiencing this pain. Didn't wanted to give up on climbing hence kept pushing through it but pain increased. I have took a week off and now I will suerly incorporate these exercise and then return back to climbing. In my case i have this pain running through biceps at times as well. Is it related to tennis elbow or some other issue? Thanks for the video 🙌♥️
@BoulderLab26 күн бұрын
It could be that your climbing technique needs tweeking. These pains are sometimes the result of poor footwork for example. So I'd most prob hire a coach to have a look at you in the gym. Also, don't underestimate the pros of a visit to a physio, could be that the bicep pain is a result of tighteness in other muscles. That's just very general advice, but hope it helps!

Yeah, that seems to be the general consensus. With me the key was to make super incremental steps and load it very slowly.

@@LFSJack Something which really helped me (I also had reoccuring tennis elbow), was asking one of the other coaches at the gym to look at how I climb. I then made tweaks in how I used my feet and interestingly enough changed my wrist position on crimps. I felt like that helped me to kick the injury in the long run.

It's a pleasure to find your channel. We were neighbours at those apartments in Kalymnos, spring 2022! I came here looking for tips on a kind of mantel problem that I have on a vertical outdoor climb in Thailand. So I have both hands on a crimpy mantel ledge. Then I need to get my right foot high, but I'm kind of compressed here struggling to keep my hip in. I then need to pinch a small undercling with my right hand, but it's out of reach. Now, I've managed to make the move once but I'm struggling to do it again. Somehow I transferred weight onto my right foot, stood up a bit, converted my left hand crimp to a mantel, and then had the height to reach the small undercling with my right hand. I hope you can picture the problem somewhat. Do you have a video covering something like this? I will experiment with the hanging left leg and sitting on the right leg, just like in this video for now.
@BoulderLab3 ай бұрын
Hello Stephen!! Yeah I remember always intruding upon your breakfast 😆 Amazing to hear from you in the roundabout way which is youtube! Getting into underclimgs off a mantle can be hard , but good job getting some height on that right foot. Funnily enough we just shot another episode on mantleing. It's in post production at the mo, but we hope to get it out by the end of the month. Also, I would say that taller climbers sometimes have it harder to get those hips into the wall...so maybe some hip mobility would be a good idea.

I am not sure who is the target, but I remember a few years ago when I was trying to visualize sequences on some route and... I was completely blank. After very many attempts I started to "understand" how to do so. I think it is a good idea, in the beginning, to think about the routes that we did earlier or we saw someone else doing it. And try to plan what we do as often as we only can. Visualizing will get better eventually. Oh and yeah. Recording myself probably help me a lot, so... this could be a some kind of solution too. BTW: IMO it is fine to go on some routes without any plan and go with the "flow". As long as you know what you do 😉 Ofc in all other situations visualizing is great, especially bcuz it can motivate our subconscious 🙂

Thanks a lot for your comment Remi. You're right of course, it's not as black and white as we presented it in this vid. But true to our decision to keep the vids short we tackled one aspect of bouldering planning. What about arm wrestlers? i do arm wrestling with a lot of bent wrist exercise. Is tennis elbow syndrome inevitable?
@BoulderLab Жыл бұрын
I wouldn't be able to say for sure, as I'm not a physio or doctor. I think it also depends a lot on how you engage your shoulder muscles. With climbing a bent wrist in this kind of stretch inevitably leads to tennis elbow, bit that's in correlation with the climbing itself and the the stress you put your whole system under, stress it wasn't built for. I'm not sure about wrestling. But I'm sure a physio who deals with wrestling injuries could ;)

The point is high volume low intensity. Unlike muscle injuries, tendon injuries do not get better with rest.

Have you tried exercises for tennis elbow to heal golfer's elbow? Especially stretching.
@BoulderLab Жыл бұрын
Yeah! I do both actually as I've heard from almost everyone that I've spoken to that both injuries go in pairs and it's really easy to get one once you have the other. I got slight tennis elbow initially, but I think that was a result of doing too many intensive exercises for shoulder conditioning, and compensating when I did finally jump on the wall.
@strongspeed Жыл бұрын
does this help tennis elbow too?
@BoulderLab Жыл бұрын
With tennis elbow it's the the other way round, you do eccentric exercises but you do them to load the extensor on the outside of the forearm. So when I do the exercise at 0:35 in the vid, you need to do that upside down. Start with very small weights and work your way up slowly.
@lucianfernandez6256 Жыл бұрын
Can you still climb and take it easy?
@BoulderLab Жыл бұрын
I try and try and try to take it easy, but the heart wants what it wants, and it wants to climb hard. It's a constant dialogue in my head. I've also started climbing on overhanging walls..just a little, to test my elbow. Will see what happens.

Best of your series so far. I hope you go on and pretend you have other common climbers injuries....tennis elbow....what is it really? That calls for some anatomy so we can see that actually there are huge variety of issues with muscles, tendons and nerves which get lumped together...because really pinning down causes is not easy....even for the most qualified. If someone is going climbing....or playing music...these are fundamentals widely ignored.
@BoulderLab Жыл бұрын
I only wish it was pretending. I'm still dealing with it, although it's now at the stage where I can climb, but I can't train yet, which is super frustrating. Seen a bunch of physio's and osteopaths...everyone has there own theory on how to fix it. The common denominator is that the golfer's "climber's" elbow is often the result of other underlying injuries, such as stiff shoulders...or simply bad climbing technique, built up over the years.
@uhoh007 Жыл бұрын
@@BoulderLab It's clear you have a real injury, which effects millions of people. I should not have used the word "pretend", but I just meant it would be nice to hear from you about other very common similar nerve and tendon problems we all face.
@BoulderLab Жыл бұрын
@@uhoh007 I'm sure we will do more episodes on injuries. But there are so many topics we want to cover! Also, it's different if it's not personal. With the elbow we did lot's of research, and the level of in depth knowledge is different if you actually go through it. But both Marek and I have had shoulder injuries, maybe that will be next on the firing line.
