I absolutely adore this retrofit! I have an old Tradesman brand table saw that predates riving knives that I bought from a retired woodworker for a steal. It uses this old style trunion/splitter setup (or at least that seems to be what google calls it). But I have been thinking about whether I could just build my own riving knife mount for the blade assembly. Will definitely use this as the basis for it. I'm wondering if it could be possible to make the riving knife easily adjustable/extendable to try and solve the issue you highlighted at the end associated with the raising and lowering of the blade being based on tilt.

I think you mentioned that you read your comments so heres a little story for you, though it's nothing compared to the story you have shared building with all of us! ... I cut my first dovetails in the first few months after graduating college, obviously I did not study woodworking. I started with Japanese saw that I still use to this day. In the few years of my woodworking career I cut hundreds of dove tails making boxes for people, always trying to make a fancier drawer, or a better knob.... I landed a job with a renowned chair-maker here in Asheville, 3 years later I went back on my own now with serious draw knife and spokeshave and card scraper skills, now I have found my own superniche which allows me to push my craft. And now! with inspiration from you I get to push at a whole new level...kinda like the 4 minute mile phenomenon. Thank you for posting these videos.

This model of Narex chisels are NOT intended for fine woodworking the same way as a lathe gouge is not intended for carving. I don't see the point here.

Smart solution. You are very close to the solution for these old Unisaws. Still, the blade has to always be at the same high as the knife. Thanks for the video. Gave me an idea of what to do.

I’m impressed with your engineering skills, though I do suggest you invest in a metal lathe if you’re serious about producing metal objects of beauty. I had a look at your site. Quite impressive-your artistic skills, I mean. I wish you all the best in your creative endeavours!

Thank you! I do own a metal lathe now but I still use the wood lathe a lot for metal as it lets me make curves that are either really hard or impossible to make a on small metal lathe. The best option would be a metal cnc lathe but that's a lot of $$ and not as much fun :P

I really can’t stand when content creators use the “virtual tinnitus” like at 7:55. All it does is exacerbate my tinnitus and give a quick +50bpm to my heart from remembering how it happened (hitting an IED in Iraq). Thanks for the unnecessary PTSD before bedtime. Edit: I did enjoy the other 99% of it (including the skit at the end, lol)

This is one of the most overcomplicated, ridiculous and niche things I've ever seen. It took ages to build and is only marginally more effective than just buying a cheap dead-blow hammer. I love it! It's beautiful, effective, well thought-out (wonderful testing montage btw), lovely finish. The only thing that I'm less than enthusiastic about is the way the leather is attached, but I can see why it was done that way and there's nothing wrong with it! I need to get my hands on some wood so I can finish a few of the projects I have in mind...

This video is quite helpful. I just acquired a Stanley 19, and your video helped me visualize better how it all fits together. Problem I’m having: Set screw is very loose and wobbly until/unless it is screwed all the way down. Once it is, the screw head is then so low, I can’t get the cap to catch on it. Back it out, the cap catches and clicks shut, but entire assembly then woggles all over the place (because screw is wobbly if not tightened all the way to the bottom). Did you have any similar issue? Doesn’t look like it. Wondering if it’s the wrong screw, but where would I find specs to find out? Sigh.
6 ай бұрын
Looks like it may either be the wrong screw or a really warn out screw. Check to see if the screw looks the same, but if it does, maybe try using teflon tape or some kind of glue to fill the gaps in the gaps in the thread?
@jbelian
@jbelian 6 ай бұрын
Thank you so much for taking the time to reply! @ The screw that came with this one is definitely loose all the way around, but its threads do not appear very worn, so I suspect it is not the right one. It also appears to have a flatter head than the one in your video and other photos I've scrutinized. I have ordered a (purportedly) correct screw from the Bay but was thinking of the teflon tape trick as well, if that doesn't work. I'll let you know!

Great video, I definitely subscribed. Though, I'm pretty sure the straight part of the chisel is there on purpose because for most people most of the time its useful having a straight edge. Of course its in the way of dovetailing, but that is a very specific type of work, that requires a specific tool.

Anybody can build a standard handle. And a lot can design a complex handle. But the talent is in taking the design and actually making it. Now I'm inspired! And I love the music and commentary. Addenda: so it's overly complicated. If you're happy with it, what else matters. (And yes, I know the difference between "because it is cool" and "how to make this in a production run." "Not this way, obviously."
