Backin the 1960's my parents used to like going on regular canal walks and try different canals each time. Around about 1965 mom took me up to Lichfield on the train from Erdington and we intended joining this canal at Birmingham Road and walking from there in a westerly direction. When we got there we were horrified at the state of it. Partially filled in, rubbish everywhere and the lock gates broken and rotting, a very sad sight indeed, and one that has stayed with me all these years. @@michaelhibbert4393 the puddlebanks are paid for up until the corner just before the aqueduct and the material is already donated by a local firm. Once the bridge is up the puddlebanks are being done then they will work back to Staveley and rebuild the line. That adds about half a mile in water I think and then fundraising will start for the aqueduct. They have a lock to build as well which I think is largely paid for with the recent Keith Ayling fundraiser. That’s due to be built early next year. That fundraiser showed how quickly the trust can raise money, it’ll need a fair bit more for the aqueduct, I don’t know exact figures but a couple of mill I’d imagine

@CourtAboveTheCut
@CourtAboveTheCut 10 күн бұрын
I doubt even LHCRT can answer that. I think the initial aim will be to get the canal to where this video ends. The issue is it means locks and getting under a railway, the land is there so if they can work the magic they always do then I can personally see 10 years. Once boats are this far then it’s about securing land in the middle but the ball will be well and truly rolling and the benefits obvious so it’ll make it easier to push the agenda with the councils and funders

I lived in Chesterfield from 92 to 99 opposite the old football ground onSaltergate. I regularly used to ride through town and get on the canal towpath and ride down to Staveley. The canal had only been restored down to the bridge that was behind Morrisons. I would continue my bike ride through to the Rother Valley Country Park. From there it was a very uncomfortable walk through a 6 foot high jungle of weeds to the road. Across the road then across to a footbridge across the railway. Then down a path to the embankment of the old Great Central Railway trackbed. It was a straight ride from there to the Country Park. So this video is amazing showing the progress they have made over the years. In the 60s when I was a kid we would regularly fish the canal near Worksop. There was a story of some workmen doing some maintenance on the canal and finding a chain. They pulled the chain out of the canal only to find that it was a plug and they drained a section completely empty. Peter Robinson (born and raised in Hodthorpe near Whitwell). If i remember correctly, the HS2 planners hadn't made any reference to the canal whatsoever, but the route cut through it in something like eight places. Given the legislation passed that effectively gave HS2 carte blanche to do what they wanted this (at that time) meant the end of the canal restoration (and destruction of many already restored sections). They also had huge amounts of grants already secured but the HS2 issue meant that the canal trust could no longer guarantee the long term future of the project (an essential requirement for lottery grants etc.) This meant they had to give the money back!
