That’s amazing! Thank you for demonstrating this technique. I have just become interested in this method. I would never have believed purple would “disappear! I looked for your flamingo, but couldn’t find it. Is it on YT?

Artists amaze me. I can not draw anything, my Grandaughter can draw perfectly what she can see My car including the glass, or a portrait of anyone or thing, I am totally amazed how this can be done, I tried an art class and my results were no better, My grandaughter (15 yrs) just draws what she see's and it is like a photograph ? Gob smacked is the word Just like your art :-)

Do you mask the subject first before painting the background?

It depends. For a smaller artwork like this one and simple edges on the subject, I will usually just paint around the subject. It also depends on how wet the paper is, because I will need more time to paint the background while being careful of the subject. I could have masked the subject, and it will ultimately give you better control, but I didn't feel like using it 😄 Also, not everyone likes to use masking fluid, so wanted to do a demonstration without it. You are welcome, and thank you for your question! I didn't mask them in this particular bee-eater painting, but if I wasn't able to paint the background in separate sections (top and bottom left, and top and bottom right), then I would consider masking. Or, if the background was a large area and I wanted it to be a consistent flat wash, I would probably mask the subject. I hope that helps?

Nice video.. how do we know if the picture should be warm or cool..

Typically, you would use both...your cool colors will recede and your warm colors come forward. For example, in a landscape the subjects that are closer to you would have warm tones, and the distance would be cooler. In a portrait, the warm tones are the planes of the face (bridge of nose, cheeks, etc) and the shadows would be cooler.

I really appreciate this video, as I am a relatively new watercolorist and I'd like to paint a coyote. Nice painting. The music was too loud so when I turned it down it was difficult to hear your comments. Please don't take that as a criticism.
