Wild that this was ten years ago tonight. I was there live at Hammerstein. As a long time part of the scene from the JumpOff and Grind Time days, I'd been the first mainstream journalist who actively followed the culture in New York and where it was going. I was covering the event for Village Voice, so I got there early with my buddy Dave (who raps under the name BS / TrustBS) and we were told the spot in the balcony overlooking the event was for "press." About an hour before the event went live, security brought some wildly overdressed people to sit around us and then checked and re-checked my credentials. Turns out, extras were hired to fill out the visible on-camera seats which is why the crowd was so weird for so much of that night. Of the ones in the "press" section I spoke to, none had ever watched battle rap before and only knew Budden from "Pump It Up." There were definitely dedicated battle rap fans in the crowd as well as active and legendary battlers in the building, and the other actual press that was there were writers who hadn't followed battle rap since the Jin days (their own admission, such a "gee whiz" tone to those articles) so they came late missing most of it and wrote from the far back of the crowd. But even the most tenured battle fans among us were completely gobsmacked by Daylyt's performance. It really eclipsed Ars' excellent show opening performance which would have been an ideal first few rounds to show any non-fan what makes a good battler so compelling. Joe Budden sucked so much, it was great to see him publicly destroyed. Hearing the non-fans suggest it was "2-to-1" or "close" was so weird. It makes me wonder if those hired to be extras were specifically told to lean Budden for the broadcast. It was definitely a memorable time though. Overproduced? Yes. The Total Slaughter show leading up to it showed who really wasn't ready for television. But it was an incredible platform and probably introduced the culture to thousands who hadn't seen our world at all before.
Yooooo Daylyt actually buggin out and I never realized it cuz I thought he just shit on stage and ate it hahahaha

Who TF was the audio engineer that put together this travesty? Ironic considering they are all in the music industry...Think it just speaks to how shoddy this whole thing was. Bunch of 10 grand paychecks and as little effort as possible.

I need a Bigg K reaction video for mook and lux. That battle stinks on ice. Mook told Lux he mumbles (facts) and then did his own signature flow as a demonstration, also facts. Clown shoes, I swear people cheer for Lux because they think the bars are going over their head and they don't want to feel left out, theres nothing there to get, you're not missing anything, he just isn't saying anything. These the goats yeah? This half of rushmore? No wonder battle rap been dead. This whole event was embarrassing, I'm not even addressing the rest of the card.
