I did a road trip down to the south of France with some friends a few years ago. At the time I thought if I am going to drive through the French and Italian alps, I wanted to do it in a Porsche Boxster S. So I bought the cheapest Boxster at the time on eBay with the intention of selling the car after. 12 years on I still have that Porsche. Couldn’t bring myself to sell it. I have since replaced all suspension items, had the callipers refurbished. Spent £4k on it. Drove like new and was T boned on a roundabout having only covered 400 miles. Wrote the car off. I bought it back from the insurance company for £1200, then spent another £3500 on it, getting it back on the road. Twice this car has saved my life. I will never sell her!

I did the same with my Smart, also a euro 4 model. It maxed out at 178 km/h which felt bloody fast. The engine got so warm that it hardened all nuts and bold, when you put a wrench on they just sheared completely off. My Smart lasted 1,5 year until the engine was a complete right off and had to be replaced. Still i had the most fun while it lasted👍🏼

It's a different concept -- detuning peak power can be for many reasons. The point of the SSS is to bring the hot (or warm, if you insist) hatch to as many people as possible. It's just like how the Mazda 3 in the UK could have come with a 160hp maximum, but deliberately chose to limit the top end to 120hp on the 2.0L. It's a smart, considered and subtle approach and as you clearly felt, the point of the car lies in other strengths, so it felt no need to boast regardless of a 7.5, 8 or 9s century sprint. The buyers who know why, will know.
