Harley never added cruise to the evo sportsters because if they did, a lot less people would move up to the big twins.

Hi Jay Jay. That may certainly have been one of their motives at the time. As you probably know, the new Sportster S all come with ABS and Electronic Cruise control as standard equipment. Hopefully, my groundwork helps those who wish to add an electronic cruise to their evo units. I know I certainly appreciate it on long highway trips. Thanks for your input.

10 years later. Are you still hunting lionfish? Here in Belize, I am diving and killing them when I find them and get to them before they swim into the reef for shelter. I found snipping the fins off takes too much time. Nurse sharks will eat them once they are speared, spines and all. So will green moray eels. The nurse sharks will actually hunt with you and point to them or flush them out of hiding. I see fewer lionfish where the nurse sharks are. They seem to enjoy harassing them. I wonder about parts of the reef where divers don't regularly go. How many lionfish are there? Do you know if anyone has figured whether native fish will eat the lionfish spawn? The lionfish are very prolific, but fish spawn is a favorite food of other fish.

Hi John- I'm glad you are still hunting them in Belize. I was just on dives in Cozumel, Costa Maya, and Roatan. I have seen them in every location. However, they are less numerically. As you noted, they now have predators that will hunt them: Sharks and eels, and I have also seen groupers and snappers go after them. I have also seen scorpion fish eat them. Putting them on the lunch menu has led to people hunting them for restaurants. They taste good! From my travels, they are fewer in number now. Part of that is the active protection of the reefs by divers like yourself. I'd like to know what other divers think on the subject and what they are seeing. I don't know whether native fish are eating their spawn. Perhaps someone else can weigh in on that. Thanks for sharing and generating more thought on the subject. Safe diving, John.

I've been watching a lot of the "hunting lionfish" videos lately, and it is awesome to see that the reef you're swimming around isn't just carpeted with lionfish - goes to show that all of you going down & spearing them *is* making a difference! Thank you to you & everyone else who is trying to get a handle on them :)

When you were training the fish to eat Lionfish did you leave them the instructions on how to use the clippers? Otherwise they will be trying to eat their Lionfish with the spines still on.
@markschwarzbauer4555
@markschwarzbauer4555 7 жыл бұрын
That's a good one Telltales100. On this trip they were clipped. However, I just did another trip to St Kitts in April where we speared the Lionfish and fed them whole to the black tip reef sharks. The sharks were thrilled to eat them and had no issues. In the Caribbean the Lionfish are destroying reefs due to lack of predators. Last week diving in the Pacific and Sea of Cortez we didn't see a single Lionfish as the populations there are controlled by nature. The imbalance created by their release into the Caribbean is still devastating. This is at least one effort to restore balance without introducing another potential imbalance. Best wishes and thanks for the feedback.

Mark Schwarzbauer I truly understand what you are doing and I'm all for it. It just looked funny to me that you were clipping off the spines for them because they wouldn't be able to do it for themselves. I have seen videos on here from around Florida where they are having the same problem with them and encourage divers to hunt and kill them. It would be great if a predator could be found for them native to the areas where the lionfish are not wanted. Sorry about the earlier comment. I do have a couple questions though. Will the sharks catch them on their own and what effect do the spines have on the sharks?

Lionfish are not poisonous, they are venomous. This is a great video and I enjoyed watching it. However, we have found that 'training' wildlife to eat lionfish can be counter productive. Sharks and eels associate divers, especially those with spears, with food and don't learn to hunt on their own. I can always tell when I am in an area where divers have been feeding the predators as they become mildly aggressive and rather impatient if you are not killing lionfish fast enough for them. I have had sharks bump me while lining up a shot. I do kill lionfish whenever I find them but leave them stuffed into small cracks and holes for the scavengers to feed off them. Just my two cents worth.

Great video, was this shot with the IC10 with a red filter? What kind of batteries did you use?
@markschwarzbauer4555
@markschwarzbauer4555 10 жыл бұрын
Hi Bryan. Yes this was shot with the IC10 using the IFRED or Intova Red filter. I used lithium AA batteries. They are more expensive that the alkaline but I didn't want to run out of power. I use the theory of shoot now and process later. I usually take around 250 shots during a two tank dive. After processing I have about 10-20% that I keep. This was a very early video I did. I since upgraded to the Intova Mega-nova 2000 lumen light that I use for both video and stills. I also upgraded to the IC12 and then the IC14. Now I shoot with an Olympus four-thirds model. I have some lessons on strobe use and shooting with the IC10-14 on my website drmark920 dot com.

Mark Schwarzbauer Thanks for the great information. I really can't afford the strobe right now, but will keep it in mind. I assume that the pics will come out blue without the strobe. When you are shooting video, what does the strobe do? Stay on or what? I noticed on your website that you said a strobe is a must for pictures. What about video. Going to be diving St. Thomas on Sept. 24. Just got the IC10. I will go and get some of the lithium AA batteries for the trip. Again thanks for the information.
@markschwarzbauer4555

Bryan Jones Hi Bryan: The "strobe" is basically an external flash. It only goes off briefly to take still pics. There are some like myself who have switched to using a video light instead of a strobe. That way it stays lit for video and lights things well enough for still pics also. I also like using the video light because I can check under the reef edges and see into caverns. You can get away without the strobe at some depth (usually down to about 60 feet) by doing a "manual white balance." Follow the instructions in the IC10 users manual for "manual white balance." Get used to doing this above water, inside the housing so you can quickly do it underwater. You need to manually set the white balance every time you descend or ascend several feet. I hope this helps. One more thought for you, in St Thomas can go to Coki Beach. Tell Peter I sent you. I have an HD video featuring Coki beach that will give you some highlights. Best wishes.

What kind of camera, red lens, lighting and other equiptment are being used?
@markschwarzbauer4555
@markschwarzbauer4555 10 жыл бұрын
Hi Shelly: This one was shot with a kodak Zi8, in an ikelite housing with ikelite red lens. It has decent 1080 video but lacks auto focus (it is fixed lens) and lacks optical image stabilization. Stills were captured with Intova IC14. I now use the Canon HF-M30 with the WP-V2 case for video, and Olympus PT-EP01 Underwater Case with the PEN E-PL1. The Canon has optical image stabilization and build in RED filter setting. The lighting was done with a 500 lumen video light and pics with dual strobes. I have since switched to using an Intova Meganova 2000 lumen light with a wide angle lens attached to the front and a diffuser dome for both video and pics. I have some more details about equipment and tips on my website drmark920.com I hope that helps. Thanks for watching.

I agree the water temperature is the likely cause. I also agree with Nobel Prize winner in Physics Dr. Ivar Giaever that it is not due to global warming. Near this popular dive area is the outlet for the water treatment facility for Aruba. The outlet water warms the water in this area and is probably responsible for the coral death. Interestingly, the warm water also attracts larger numbers of fish. I've also seen this at "Electric Beach" in Oahu. The wild dolphins love it.

Hi Vince. All this doomsday hype centers around the Mayan Calendar. Actually you can buy the integrated Mayan/Aztec calendars. As long as there are gullible people there will be manipulators of information. I'm sorry if you have gotten caught in it. I would encourage you to look beyond the purveyors of doom for profit.

Thanks for the comment and posting. There was a lot of "snow caps" of dead coral. I'm not sure what caused it. In spite of the dead spots there was plenty of marine life. In fact I saw the biggest Green Moray of all dives. It was so thick and long it didn't even bother to hide! I would still love to return to Aruba someday and dive it again. I am looking forward to Puerto Rico!

Sorry 3131USMARINE, but they did NOT predict the coming of the conquistadors. That is nothing more than another totally fabricated story to create drama. Yes, the Mayans were remarkable people with excellent mathematics. I was even more impressed with their construction skills. However, as it was stated on the video by a Mayan elder, the 2012 doomsday is nothing more than myth created for drama and the Mayans themselves don't believe it. Don't let people take advantage of you through fear.

this video is so dumb the mayans actually did predict the conquistadors but it was in there calendar as the day the white man came and they also predicted the first solar alignment1000s of year before it happened the mayans were truly remarkable
