I was behind the stage in memphis. They had a fake speaker cabinet beside Gary. During a song when the lights were down a bit a tech who was sitting in the cab would reach out and take one of Gary's guitars off a stand and tune it with an oscilloscope and put it back on the stand.

I always liked Kevin's voice especially up to the double live REO album "You get what you play for" from 1977. I was very disappointed when original bassist and founding member the late Gregg Philbin was replaced. He grooved and filled on the bass much better than his replacement but hey, when you're going for the money, you can't allow too much expression and creativity happening especially on the bass! Just my opinion but I do like early REO!

Bruce sounds like a nice guy and probably was a good replacement when REO decided to go commercial and become more of a ballad band. I still prefer listening to pre 1978 REO when original founder and bassist the late Gregg Philbin was with REO. Gregg played the amazing groove and fill bass lines on the double live REO album "Go for what you know". Just my preference. By the way, for any long time REO fans out there, there are interviews with original REO Bassist the late Gregg Philbin on KZfaq if you search...

Would have been interesting to hear him jam with original band member and founder the late Gregg Philbin on bass! Gregg played on REO's "You get what you play for" double live album in 1977. Then he was replaced. He was the best bassist they ever had.. in my opinion.

Neal was always a great keyboard player for REO Speedwagon. I prefer listening to early REO featuring Mike Murphy on vocals and original founding band member bassist Gregg Philbin. RIP Gregg Philbin.

I find him to be a delightful conversationalist. One question Neil, did you break the addiction to Soap Operas? You sir, got me strung out! Haha! Charming human being, doesn't put on Aires to impress. Just "Real", authentic & genuine. Also, can keep a 3 year old entertained in a baby pool for hours. I admire his skill and artistry greatly...I wish you a very Happy New Year Neil & the whole REO Familia! Hugs, d.crow from the Rocky Mountains

Where is the rest of the interview? My musical start was similar to Neal's except my mom made me take PIANO lessons. I never got good on piano, but I did learn about harmonies, and some music theory, so that like him, when the Beatles appeared, I taught myself guitar, using the musical ideas I had learned from piano. I NEVER learned to properly read music, and I'm sure Neal can. Also, I never got rich or famous playing music, but I DID eventually get myself an honest to goodness Hammond tonewheel organ and twin rotor Leslie speaker, which I LOVE. No offense to Neal, but it was first Jimmy Greenspoon, then Jon Lord, who got me hooked on the Hammond/Leslie magnificence. My first instrument remains the guitar though. There's a lesson in all my rambling ................ whatever musical instrument you finally hook up with, play it with passion, love and joy. Music is a universal language that we all can enjoy and help us all connect in one way or another. Play it the best you can, and if you aren't THE best, don't worry. Someone out there is wishing they could play as well as you can. Just be a good ambassador and bring them into the fold.

Great discussion, and great attitude about music and the teaching thereof! I think Neal D is the only surviving member of the original REO (last one still in the band), although maybe Bruce Hall was there, too (Kevin Cronin might as well be a founding member, although technically he isn’t). And yes, I *did* know the origin of the name “REO Speedwagon” - I’ve seen a real one at a classic-car show.

His own band said they didn't want to play with him anymore. Truth is they band wasn't happy with Gary or Kevin because they kept all the money and paid those guys maybe 10 or 15 % to split for playing because of all the song writing royalties. Most of the Gary's original guys quit also. I think Neal is the only one that stayed but he was to valuable not to pay much better regardless of royalties.

Neal is an interesting guy. Probably the smartest member. I would enjoy a long conversation with him. After he leaves REO he should consider speaking to groups about his experience in a rock band for all those years. I'm tired of hearing Gary this and Gary that. Gary should have been grateful to even be in this band. I wouldn't mind being the #2, 3, or 4 member. Cronin played his part. It so happened he was the singer. Everyone should get over it and admit the ballads were rock gold.
