Great footage! These Santa Ana River Trail videos have made me so homesick. This is where I started riding seriously when I lived in Orange. I'd ride from my apartment to the trail entrance at either Chapman or Lincoln. Then, depending on the weather and my training plans, would either head to/toward Huntington Beach or to/toward Green River Road. Good trip down memory lane.

Awesome! My wife and I just did that run a week ago today, and it was... interesting. We are both in our mid 60's and ride electric scooters and LOL, I suppose get some stink-eye from pedal peeps, but it is "hands on" trail with people coming at you in close proximity, and a lot of deadly rocks held by concrete in downslopes. No room for error, simply put! It was heartbreaking to see the Valley Drive In Theater in the last bits of life, just the diamond patterns barely visible as they grade it for, ugh, more houses. But the ride is great, the BUGS will smack ya, but its beautiful there and I grew up 150 yards from the entrance, long ago. Thanks for the filming! Great job, very good motion control!
@greatbikeridesofsocal2713 күн бұрын
Cool to hear, thanks for the comment. The housing development will include shopping and a wave pool. I really hope it can be seen from the bike trail. Surfing and then sky-diving makes this a most unique ride. I assume the scary side with pointy rocks in concrete is to shore up the land dam, which this ultimately is. The bike path was a bonus, I think.
@ApatiEktetheimenos3 күн бұрын
@@greatbikeridesofsocal271 Yes a bonus. We would catch turtles in the SLR river as kids. And more than once, it would flood-out the road to the harbor, just obliterate it! But if they do make a wavepool there and don't hide it, I would guess that might make a bit of a jamb there! Not much shoulder. It was fun seeing the jumpers too on our ride. BTW, I seen a few of your films, really, the quality is great. Since we scooter, yep, cheating at our age but too bad, the place to go for a real long fun ride, is Borrego! Enjoy!

Ward, Do you know if it is possible to ride from San Clemente to Oceanside, thru Camp Pendleton? Since you cannot ride along the Freeway, I have been told years ago that permission to ride through this Marine base was obtainable. What do you think. I formerly lived in San Clemente and know there is access there to the northern end of this base. That would make for an interesting ride. Best regards, Wayne
@greatbikeridesofsocal2717 күн бұрын
You can ride that stretch along I-5. That may be the only stretch of interstate where it is legal. You can get from San Clemente to the Las Pulgas Rd exit via Old Pacific Hwy and Old Pacific Hwy trail. So it would be then be 8 miles on 5 from Las Pulgas Rd and you would exit on Harbor Dr. You can get a bike pass to go through Pendleton. You have to go to the visitors center at the main gate. It takes an hour or so because they run a background check (bring ID) and it is good for a year. That said, the visitor's center has been mostly closed for the last year. My pass expired last August. They say it is still good until the visitors center reopens, but I have not tested it lately and I'm not sure if the visitor's center has reopened or not. It has been closed the last 3-4 times I've tried to swing by. I do have videos of Old Pacific Hwy Trail and Old Pacific Hwy available. When I'm doing that ride I drive the bike up to Las Pulgas Rd. You can park there at the trailhead.

Me too. I took it on the Surfliner once before, but it was at Union Station and the train was waiting to leave. There was no one at the door so I parked the bike and he didn't check my ticket until we were underway. Making it on the train and seeing there was another fat tire bike on the train is a good sign. It might depend who is working when one tries to board or it may not matter.

I take the train (you can take your bike on trains here) from Oceanside to Old Town station. Heading west it is 3.4 miles to Ocean Beach and is a very straightforward ride. Heading east (as I do in this video) is more complicated as the path goes a couple of miles, then there's a street ride and it picks back up.
