Sweet! I have a CNC router, not a laser, so I've been wondering the process you laser folks use to make something like this 🙂 Turned out great, thanks for sharing. Also, I'll point out that it's an octagon and not a hexagon before someone rude comes along and says it 😅

If you inserted a dowel or pin in the centre hole on the first/bottom layer, you would have had a perfect alignment guide for the subsequent layers. There would have been no need to eyeball it.
@Tim_Ung
@Tim_Ung 20 күн бұрын
I’ve tried that before and a few things happen. The dowel or pin can either be loose or too tight causing the next layer to shift around as it’s being placed or the dowel being glued into the finished piece. Maybe I just need to finesse it a bit and figure out a good pin and size.

Nice demo. It's interesting to see how much can be done by controlling the beam power and movement. What kind of laser did you use? Back in the 1970s efforts to cut bread with lasers resulted in burnt toast because they didn't have that much control.
@Tim_Ung
@Tim_Ung Ай бұрын
Thanks! It's a basic laser cutter with adjustable power/speed controls. I think the biggest factor for this test was ventilation. It kept the bread from catching on fire while the laser was cutting all the way through.

Another nice piece. I can see the resemblance to the museum. Have you thought about factoring in the laser kerf to make a tighter fit so no glue would be needed?
@Tim_Ung
@Tim_Ung Ай бұрын
Thank you! I used to design my projects with kerf factored in, but I decided to make it a loose fit because I sell a lot of the design files. Materials differ from location to location, so the loose fit ensures that people around the world can also make the product without having to adjust every slot and tab.
@RoseKindred
@RoseKindred Ай бұрын
@@Tim_Ung That is what I figured. But, I thought when you sent it to the laser program (I am assuming lightburn) for your test you would benefit from using the offset in lightburn. Either way, it worked well. You were right about reducing the height of the lamp, it was more appealing.

Hello Tim! I have a big question :) If we want to design a non symmetrical plus rotating shape, is there a way to do the rotating part in Slicer? Or are we supposed to do it manually on a 2d program?
@Tim_Ung
@Tim_Ung Ай бұрын
Oh that's a great question! If it were me, I'd design the patterns for each layer (using a 3D model and slicer or Fusion360), then it's actually rotating the sheet of cardboard before you laser cut it. The rotation that you see in this project is from turning each layer the same degree. So if the shape is non-symmetrical, you would just turn the cardboard sheet in the laser cutter before it gets cut. Once you assemble the product, the corrugations should rotate when you look at the product from the side

@@Tim_Ung Thank you so much for your answer and apologies for my late answer, I thought I already answered! I have one more important question, I have a bit more complex and curvy shape and when i import an obj. file to slicer, the cut files seems to be created with little lines instead of smooth curves, which causes laser cut machine to work slower. What can be the problem here?🤔
@Tim_Ung
@Tim_Ung 25 күн бұрын
@@sevdesevinc depending on the software you’re using, when you export a model as an OBJ file, you usually get options to make the model more or less accurate. I usually make it as accurate as possible on the export. This makes the model size larger because it creates a lot more polygons to get complex curves to work. Sounds like that might be happening with your file

I live in SoCal and been thinking about the idea of building a house on our lot because prices are ridiculous. The lot is 7700sqft, which isn't a lot and the courtyard idea is great, but instead of planting trees I'd prefer a koi pond with Japanese garden theme. A place that also allows people to gather, drink, socialize and eat. I don't have the lot dimensions at this time, but it's not a perfect square. It's somewhat deeper, based on eyeballing the satellite imagery, i'd say it's maybe 60x128 = 7700sq ft. I know in my area, the side access needs to be 5ft on each side, which leaves me with 50ft of buildable space. That's so limiting. What are your thoughts?
@Tim_Ung
@Tim_Ung Ай бұрын
That’s an interesting concept! I had a similar idea, which you can see in the water courtyard home video. The center courtyard is a reflecting pool, but it could also be deeper and turned into a koi pond. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/msCFfpuamazDp3U.html
@KoiAquaponics
@KoiAquaponics Ай бұрын
@@Tim_Ung this one is more suited for a square lot. I'm looking for one that's on a narrow but long lot.
@Tim_Ung
@Tim_Ung Ай бұрын
@@KoiAquaponics ah I see! Long and narrow lots are tricky for courtyard houses, but there’s actually a lot of examples in some of the dense areas of Japan like Tokyo. The koi pond will probably be long and narrow too. If it were me, I’d look at putting the koi pond against a solid wall of the courtyard with a water feature that cycles water like a steady stream. That would also help aerate the pond. The solid wall could be where private spaces are on the other side (bedrooms, etc.) and people can gather in the yard next to the pond. It sounds like a fun design problem to solve! Good luck.

I like the design, but if I was doing it, I would have designed it so that the white part of the bulb was not visible and was obscured somehow. I find that part detracts from the beauty of the item as a whole, especially the writing that can be seen.
@Tim_Ung
@Tim_Ung 2 ай бұрын
This is a good point and it's something I consider with every design. One way of obscuring the bulb is to rotate each panel at an angle. For this specific design, I think seeing the bulb is part of its beauty and works well.

@Tim_Ung
@Tim_Ung 2 ай бұрын
Sure! I think you need to remember that when your laser is cutting a material, the laser actually has some thickness to the beam that’s cutting. You need to figure out what that small amount is and remember to include it in your design. Also, if you’re trying to make a very tight and exact fit, it might be a problem if the final piece is in a hot room or cold one. Materials expand and contract, so it will expand and pop or contract and leave gaps based on temperature

The courtyard in this design isn’t “indoor” since it’s open at the top. You might be thinking about an enclosed central courtyard with a glass roof. If that’s the case, automatically operated windows would help because it would open up and let out the heat.
