Sunday ... That's tomorrow. It will be warm tomorrow and LOGM is at a high elevation. So you will face an even higher density altitude. And there are mountains all around. That's why the pattern has a 'dent'. Just make sure to double-check all your performance calculations. Otherwise have fun! LOGM is one of my favorite airfields! Last time we were there, they offered us bikes for free and we could pedal to Erlaufsee (approx 20 minutes by bike) which was awesome.

@@FlyingRagilein I'm watching the weather develop, there are still TCUs along our route from LZDV, and the winds are rather strong, but Sunday should be calmer, cloudless, a window of opportunity. Hallo!

"Just extend flight time" by how much? Current state of battery technology is not going to help here I'm afraid.
@FlyingRagilein
@FlyingRagilein 8 ай бұрын
If the energy density of batteries could be doubled, that would be great. Hopefully, solid state batteries can deliver this in the not so far away future. Toyota has announced that they plan to produce solid state batteries in 2027. We will see, if this really happens. But if they succeed, this would increase the possible cross country flight time from currently about 30 min (with 30 min reserve) to 1 hour and 30 min. That would be enough for most of the flights I usually do.

@@FlyingRagilein yeap :) BTW, how does it feel to fly it compared to a piston engine aircraft? Does it have more of a "turboprop feeling" to it?
@FlyingRagilein
@FlyingRagilein Жыл бұрын
@@amiramyss I'm afraid, I don't know how a turboprop feels, because I never had the chance to fly one. So I can only compare it to a piston engine a/c. Generally, an electric a/c produces less noise. The engine itself practically produces no noise at all and there is also no exhaust noise. However there is still some noise in the cockpit. Mainly from the propeller and from the wind. Due to the limited energy in the batteries, we always try to fly as economically as possible. Which means that we fly at about 70kt which consumes about 20kW. That's about the same power that an electric car uses at this speed. So it is a very relaxed flying. Less noise, less vibrations, no odours and a little slower than usual. Otherwise there is little difference from a piston engine a/c. In fact there is also a Rotax powered version of the Velis - the Virus.

The simple answer is both- to high but on speed- reduce power and lower the nose. On slope but too fast- reduce power and raise the nose. Trying to use one in isolation means you are not anticipating the effect both power and attitude have to both speed and rate of descent.
@Treadstone7
@Treadstone7 2 жыл бұрын
absolutely, when I observe discussions about this topic, it often seems like people want to use both separately. But that isn't going to work as you pointed out. If you are too low on approach but speed is correct and you would try to correct only with power (for rate of descend),you would automatically gain airspeed because power only makes the aircraft climb indirectly. Before it can climb, it needs to accelerate. So this way, you will definitely mess up your airspeed or glidepath. You are right, they only work in conjunction.
@FlyingRagilein
@FlyingRagilein 2 жыл бұрын
You are both right. It is always both pitch & power. But what I discovered for me is, that I use pitch & power differently as primary and secondary glide path controls, depending on where on the approach I am. When I'm further out on the approach, I use power for glide-path and pitch & trim for airspeed. That' works good, because I have still a lot of time until touch-down and no reliable aiming point anyways. Therefore the lag between adding-/removing power and its effect on the glide path is no problem. So, far out, I handle glide path deviations more as an energy problem which I solve by power, and speed deviations as an AOA problem which I solve by pitch & trim. However, the closer to the runway I come, the more important becomes the aiming point. When I'm close to the RWY, trying to nail the aiming point on its position with power-changes does not work for me. On short final, it's much easier to control the glide path with pitch. So that's what I do. And small deviations in airspeed are then corrected by power. So, close to the RWY, I handle glide path deviations more as a flight path problem which I solve by pitch, and speed deviations as an energy problem which I solve by power.

you can get away with using power for glide path but you can't get away with only using pitch for glide path!
@FlyingRagilein

You are right. On short final, when I use pitch for glide path, I have to use power for speed control. It's never "pitch only". Pitching up without adding power is a very bad idea (except you are too fast). But there are also situations where you have no power: Power off landings. Better be a little on the high side in these.

You can’t always get away with using power for glide path. Ever fly a pusher with a high drag (or thrust… I could’ve sworn the guy explaining it to me said drag…) line? Power causes the nose to pitch down instead of up. (And reducing it causes the nose to pitch up instead of down!) you will literally accelerate yourself into a crater…
