I just had a thought, i wonder if the cheaper lathes and mills , with plastic gears, could be bought, then make molds for lost wax castings from the gears and other parts. Make stronger gears from iron or brass, bronze, or even aluminum. I think iron and brass gears, maybe every other gear from brass. And make replacements from iron. Just incase. With different metals the wear would be less than with hardened steel gears. Maybe set up a hollow brush to drip oil. Or possibly use super sticky lucas oil stabilizer on the gears. Possibly semi enclose the gears in a oil bath. Any changes are going to be messy. Maybe a dry film lubricant can be used. Then replace the motor with a 1500-2500 watt brushless, with a 60-72v power supply and controller to match it. Should make a decent machine from the cheap $600-$700 machines. Then work on tightening up the ways , and leads crews. However by the time all this is done , you could go a bit further, build a complete lathe. With 6"- 8", 10" chuck with room to swing about 18" x 36" stuff! Weld some steel bars on a 12" I beam about 4' long. Used either killed 1/2" thick 2" angle welded to 1/4" or 1/2 flat bar 4" wide as the ways, with matching bits to mount thr head and tail, and carriage . With oil passages with braised on steel tubing. And a water based coolant tank underneath. Sorry for the rambling, but could be a cool project. Especially if you have access to scrap steel.

Ha! At first I was like “oh man, this guy is just writing all this stuff as a joke” and then once you wrapped it up with the final length that came from your formula I was like “oh shit…he got me…hit me in my knowledge bone”. Thanks man! Never understood the concept of theorem!

Watched all 3 build videos. Do you have any video of you using it? I assume you have to just grip/hold-onto the holder, spin the stock in the head stock chuck really slow and then turn the tail stock handle to press/start cutting the threads? It seems like maybe adding a through hole with a rod would be necessary to hold the die holder from spinning? Thank you.

Hold on...wait until I buy my $500 printer, then buy the switch a genuine mercedes part which is probably more expensive than my jeep. Just buy the clip..$5 and problem is solved

Really useful video. Thanks. What's the tool you use to get the bottom pulley off? I'm changing my belt and haven't got any way of getting it off.

I might also invest in a respirator with or without active air circulation if you're welding inside the shed. Looks like a good compact unit.

Thanks! I have looked at them before... it's a big shop and the door was also open though, so there was pretty decent air circulation.

This appears to be an standard-pattern lathe that is exported under several name brands with a different colour coating on it. Good to know it isn't entirely useless.

Actually all this work is pointless. There so much more needed to be made. There are some dedicated channels who talk about every problem of this lathe and how to fix it. This maschine can actually handle 2mm cut of steel easily. But not without serious work on it

I have the same lathe and I would like to lower the gear ratio for higher torque lower speed. I ordered a 12 tooth 5m timing pulley for the motor but I'm wondering have you tried to put a larger pulley on the spindle? I want to know what the largest I can put on it without having to modify the cover would be. Little machine shop has 40 tooth pulleys but I don't know if it will fit under the cover

I know it's 2 years since the video was released, but I saw early in the video you had access to a lathe, why didn't you just remove the step that was too big for what you needed? The last guy probably rosette welded the sleve in like you did with your slug.

Your stick out at 14:03 is WAY to much for that size/quality of lathe. Maximum should be no more than three times the diameter of the stock. 3/4” x 3 = 1 1/2”. Unless you’re using the tail stock to support the end.

2:40 1. Oil makes zero sense in that scenario. 2. My initial requirement for my first mini lathe is to be able to rework drill presses with it. You've just reminded me why :) This amount of wobble shouldn't be present even on $120 Chinese drill presses. There's something seriously wrong with the quill or the taper.
