I knew a guy in the early 90s that repainted helmets, restored leather chinstraps and liners. His paint matching skills were unmatched and no doubt a lot of nice helmets in collections are his restoration work. He even replaced liner split pins and washers.

Oven cleaner is good for removing old paint. Spray it on let it set for 5 to 10 minutes. Wear gloves and a protective apron and lightly scrub under a slow stream of water.

I worry about acetone since it damaged the lenses of my glasses when I tried to clean them with acetone. I had to get the lenses replaced. It's nasty stuff.

Have you tried electrolysis instead of vinegar? When I clean case shot or any fragment, I dip them in melted paraffin wax afterwards to preserve them.

More than likely it is post war. Check to see if it has any patina or wear to it, snow camo helmets always have a good amount of patina and wear to them. Take a Q tip and dip it in acetone and test it on a inconspicuous spot on the helmet, and if it rubs off, it's fake.

Can I ask you something? I have a German helmet at home and I would like to make it more shiny, but at the same time I plan to put a decal on it. Do you think that the decal on the helmet would hold even if there was a clear coat on it?

For those who don't know , the German helmets where painted in a oil based enamel paint . The M-35 was in a applegruan green from 1935 and 36 and it was a pea green from 1937 to 1939 , the M40 was usually in a fieldgrua or known as a shieffergrua . This is why alot of the helmets being dug up today still has the original paint on them in Russia and other battle sites .😉👍✌️

@@stuka_bly4t102 If you see one painted like that then someone has repainted the helmet and it wouldn't be original finish .The M35 from 1935 and 1936 was the applegruan finish and from 1937 to 1939 was the pea finish but the M35's that was reissued usually was repainted and refitted by hand and sent back out .

Hi, I just today picked up an original M42 helmet shell from an antique store, and the whole thing is covered in Grey post war paint. I did a test spot on the inside dome of the shell, and it removed the darker gray post war paint, and undneath was a lighter Grey paint, but it started to come off too. So I stopped of course not knowing if it was original or not, but I figured it wasn't original since it started to rub off too. Any ideas?
@rusty1415

If you are using a cotton ball, it will not be enough to take off original war era paint. I would continue taking the paint off. Most likely, someone used it as a restoration project years ago. There probably is no original paint underneath. From there, I would repaint it an appropriate color and call it a day

It depends. I would definitely be cautious, but I've seen good results on decaled helmets. What I would do is post it on warrelic.eu, a very helpful forum where you can get many second opinions if they are needed.
