NYC here, there is a misconception here, in US especially in NY, when you are invited to a party, it's a common courtesy to bring whatever you feel like bringing, it's not an obligation, and a bill will not be given to you,therefore, these people are emulating the wrong concept, if you are asked to pay, all you have to do is walk away.
