Why are you changing insulators when you dont have the basic knot down. They should have you tieing a square knot on the ground ..why dont they just have a snap on the hand line to start?

Why put the handline on your d ring and your secondary on your breakaway?

Smooth is fast, don’t put your arm between the hoist and the wire as you let off, you can smash your arm in there. Don’t frantically crank up on it you pulled a bubble right into your body, if that’s energized that’s a bad day. Unless you’re going to be a ladder lineman at the cable company play it like it’s hot. And last don’t let your groundman spin like a ballerina to untwist the ropes, just spin the block for him

Also when you hook the hoist you should have the gate facing down just in case it were to come off the wire and the gate broke.

Cute. When the wire gets bigger rig a roller on the sling instead of that clevis. Trade the cuffing hoist for a strap hoist. Easier even and slick. Since most of the training staff up there are youngsters maybe they haven’t seen better ways to rig

Nice job but flip that shackle around. Pin should be in stationary part of sling not the moving part.

Secondary always goes above the obstacle; during ascent and descent. Slow down, take your time; fumble less. Positive control on everything.

Rushing causes nervousness & vice versa, nervousness causes fumbling, and fumbling causes accidents....i think, and i think alot of JL’s will agree, that its much better to be a little slower, but smooth and calculated, than to be fast and fumble around...still good job though....we all know it aint easy and if there can be a problem, there will be 😂....like the handline hook getting wrapped in the phone, or the jack getting caught coming up....it never fails....its always the stupid stuff

It was probably the technique they showed them. That slack of small wire he could have taken a sling and tied it to the pole and wire and broke it with his elbow and let it eat. Looks like a good technique with larger and tighter wire.

Righteous! It always amazes me how quickly these Lineman schools have these guys climbing so well. I know they have to pass timed qualifications. I don’t agree with it, but they want to make sure they put out productive linemen. I’ve been climbing for 22 years, not much has changed, except the BuckSqueeze. Much safer if used correctly
@linehandibew6205

Welll actually they’re not putting out any lineman at all maybe in the non union world someone comes out of this and is called a lineman. All they’re doing is putting out cocky entitled grunts. Speed kills slow down go ho e safe

This is probably the "scariest" comp at NLC. 55 foot sidestack change out. Your first transfer is pretty high up, they have you do it a week after you climb to the top of a 35 footer, so it's very nerve racking your first couple of times until you're able to focus on the work.

If you ever get to do this in the real world all you need is the chain hoist.. wrap the chain around the pole hook it into it’s self other hook on to the armor rod jack it up pull pins swap bells and hope you have a better then average ground man. Don’t know way they are timing you when it’s pretty clear you have not been properly trained on how to climb or use your equipment. Unfortunately a lot of these line schools are just cash machines with poor instructors teaching a bunch of useless bs. My advice is get your CDL and sign the books at as many IBEW locals as you can. Start as a truck driver/ground man it’s the fastest way to get your foot in the door and then go onto an apprenticeship good luck!

I'm a journeyman lineman and I see all these videos of a young guys in these schools and you got this rodeo mentality of go as fast as you can, I'm just curious if that's what the instructors make you guys feel pressured in doing or if you think that's a way that you're gonna gauge your progress. In my experience if you learn how to do it right speed comes with repetition Not moving your hands as fast as you can and fumbling all over the place. A bad knot can get you just as dead as an energized line. Take your time do it right you'll get faster as time goes on and anyone who out there who says anything different Does not have their safety or their brother's safety in mind.

Did not tie the handling to the pole properly. A web hoist around the back of the pole would have been easier.
