These are good tips for young men in very good shape and on the light side of the scale. Older, heavier folks don't have the upper body strength or the kicking power to propel themselves up and on to a kayak, and I expect that very few women would even attempt it. The biggest error they suggest is to practice in the conditions you paddle in. 95% of the time I paddle in a river that's a half mile wide, averages 30' deep, with a 5 mph current. Freighters up to 1000' long are present every day as well as every kind of watercraft imaginable. I know my limitations and there's no way on God's green Earth am I going to get out of my kayak in those conditions and see if I can get back in. My preconceived strategy, should I find myself "swimming", is to grab my dry bag where any valuables will be, let the kayak go, and swim to shore. That's what I would suggest for anyone, anywhere. Write your name and address on the inside with a sharpie, put some styrofoam in the storage compartments, and know it will find it's way home. And so will you.

Good grief. Sometimes the most simplest solutions are the ones you need to be shown!! Great video.

3:34 that slow mo shot is great for seeing just what the kayak does when you lean over on edge, I never knew the kayak turned that easily, even before the sweep stroke.

I recently had bilateral hip replacement surgery. This looks like the only way for me to re-enter kayak without putting too much pressure on my hips although not 100% sure.. (I must not over flex my legs more than 90 degrees..) but now only 5 weeks post op.. have to wait for 6 more months to strengthen more). Still have to consult my orthopedist.. Thanks so much for the clip..

Unless youre an expert, check the weather and ask a park ranger what they think of your plan. Rescues are expensive and the park system isnt exactly operating with huge surpluses

Surely not "one of the best" but mostly "the worst" as it leave a cockpit full of water. There is always a better self-rescue than a re-enter-and-roll technique. The scramble technique being a way better selfrescue. But hey.......what do i know?

My first time Kayaking and this Kayak held strong. kzfaq.infoUgkx4k5UrhC3v_Y4hIEaXLGvHcN5a5aBmZNB The water got pretty rough as a speed boat zipped by me, and the Kayak withstood it (I expected to be capsized). The Ores are very easy to put together, the pump worked beautifully. the seats are a bit hard to sit in after a while (I recommend sitting on the floor). after reading the reviews I was very scared it'd get a hole in it, the material is very strong and durable. The Air valve may need a small Phillips head screwdriver to adjust, other than that, it's well worth the money!(update)I've gone Kayaking in 3 Lakes and 2 rivers totaling about 40 miles. the kayak had two holes and they patched easily and no other problems can't wait for kayaking season this year!

🎯 Key Takeaways for quick navigation: 00:41 All-time favorite stroke: Anti-capsize stroke stops falling in kayak. 00:56 Introduction to the low brace: Back of paddle stops fall, body rotation rights kayak. 01:22 Executing the low brace: Keep elbows up, knuckles down as boat tips. 01:50 Low brace safety: Safest stroke to protect shoulders; knuckles down, paddle shaft close. 02:18 Applying low brace: Tilt kayak to wave, back paddle face hits water, keep non-water hand close. 02:47 Crucial moment: Paddle's back face stops capsizing, wave runs under kayak. 02:59 Hip snap for recovery: Push down left side, lift right side to right kayak, resume paddling posture. Another sneak way of learning is to simply get into a swimming pool or lake so that the water is up to chest height, and practice while standing in the water. You can't capsize! You can feel the power. You can recover easily. Half an hours in boat practice done in 5 minutes. Great for high and low braces as well.

I'm thinking that a kayak without an outrigger is like a cyclist without a helmet or a driver without a seat belt. Should all kayakers fit outriggers on our kayaks?

Recognizing Gordon's personage and having paddled with him in Deception Pass, in Washington State USA, I'd add a few comments: Never, ever let go of your boat. They get a away from you in a hurry. I tend to grasp the coaming and paddle shaft rather than the deck rigging, it's a more stable anchor point. Hook your leg over the shaft to add stability while reentering. Which leg you choose will impact whether you slide into the cockpit or you sit up while dropping your butt in the seat. I do the latter. Use the float and paddle to stabilize your position by sticking the blade under BOTH arms and edging onto it while you pump out your cockpit and get yourself put back together. Stow your gear by shoving it wherever you can, depending on conditions and carry on. If it was a real self rescue in conditions be prepared to capsize again when the adrenaline drops off. I've seen it before.

Absolutely terrible instructional video. Stuffing the inflated paddle float inbetween your knees is a great way of jamming you in your kayak and drowning you if capsize again.

I have a 12 ft skiff with a small outboard that I sometimes take out on Sequim bay and in the area of point Williams. The other day, I was thinking of what would happen if I accidentally fell overboard. I'm 62 years old, and in heavy clothing and in 50-degree water, I'm not sure I could get myself back aboard such a small boat. There is no practical place to attach a boarding ladder. I keep my phone, fire-starting tools, and emergency food in a drybag that I tie to the inside of the boat, but I think I will also get a drysuit as an added safety precaution.

A great advantage of paddling in cool weather is that it's more comfortable to dress for the water, but even in the middle of summer a lot of locations make it a very good idea. Even when it's 80º and you're wearing a drytop or drysuit you won't get too hot if you can roll or do a T-rescue. Related PSA: if anything might stop you from easily swimming to a shore where you can get out of the water you need to be able to roll or do a T-rescue.

A great technique for closing distance by the rescuer, is to paddle-push the bows together, this will scissor the hulls together much faster than any side strokes.
