Amazing as I was in DEP 42 years ago for 9 months and only a couple of times, I heard from my recruiter. In fact I got worried a couple of times and called just to make sure everything was still on. I usually never got my recruiter, but would talk to another. This is so much better and organized. I heard stories of some recruits changing their minds after months and months with no interaction and not showing up for MEPS to ship or they had moved and all left no return address. Some got in trouble with the law and it was never discovered till after they had left for BCT. And back then with no internet, it was a lot harder to find someone.

Also people quit because some trainees can't get along with each other in the dorm rooms and it sucks to live with people that fight with you after being stressed out and yelled at all day by the drill seargent. It's a toxic constant stress environment.

I quit after finding out my recruiter was full of shit telling my girlfriend and I we could get married over Christmas exodus and they would change our orders. That was 13 years ago and I made the right choice cause I have a great career and we stayed together. HOWEVER, that decision haunts me enough to be trying to get in at 32z moral of the story is don’t quit if you have nothing to gain from it it, even then you’ll be bothered by it.

I was in from 1988-1991 and I don't remember being able to quit during basic training. I remember a LOT of guys wanting out during basic and AIT. Many guys went to their drill sergeant asking to get out and were told no. Many also went to the chaplain trying to get out. Honestly the only reason I went in was because I couldn't find a job. I agree its not for everybody

That was my recollection as well. I hated being in there, regretted joining, but quitting?... Not even an option. I suppose I could have faked an injury or refused to do anything at all... but I'm no bitch. Ultimately, I served my years and got out. At this point in life, as miserable as it was, I still look back at the Army as "better times".
