Two tiny maybe-try-them out suggestions: 1] Rather than honey, I like to use Maple Syrup (the real stuff , of course. I’m from Vermont). 2] While heating up the soup at eating time (*not* before canning), I like to throw in a good pinch of baking soda. This reduces the acidity of the tomatoes, and the resulting “fuzziness” can add a nice texture to the soup. (BUT, watch out: Sometimes it can foam up quite a bit, possibly overflow if your pot is too full.)

Thank you for the suggestions. I would not have considered adding baking soda to the soup.

One particular difference from canned tomato soup is that canned soup is _so_ much saltier. (Since I stared making my own, I find I simply can’t eat canned soup any more.)

We make this recipe but we make one modification to the mixing step. Once the dough is all mixed before putting away for overnight rise we cover wait 15 minutes then do a small 3-5 minute knead. Then we cover and let rise overnight then no dry bits at all in morning. Thanks for the episode. Also, have you ever tried fennel seeds on pizza, so good.

Personally, I think more people should focus on perennial fruits. They take almost no effort, so new gardeners won't get overwhelmed. Fruit is also more expensive than the typical vegetables most home gardeners focus on such as potatoes and carrots which tend to be very cheap.

Hi, thank you for that video. It was pretty awesome. My question is I hear that when you are counting you’re supposed to hear a pop not sure if it’s in the water or after you take them out. Not sure that make sure it’s sealed correctly or is that pop necessary? Again, thanks for that awesome video. I’m ready to go and sell last question. How much does one charge for a jar of jam that size I think those are 4 ounce or 8 ounce?

@BloomingWildwoodHomestead

Glad you enjoyed the video! The pop usually happens after they come out of the water. Sometimes I hear them, sometimes I don't. After allowing the jars to set overnight undisturbed, check them to see if the button is down. If you press on the lid and the button pops up and down, it is not sealed and will need to be used or reprocessed right away. Store jars with the rings off. As for selling, I am really not sure how much would be charged or what the regulations are around doing that. That is not something that I currently do. You could probably check out a local farmer's market. The vendors may be able to give you some helpful insight on regulations and pricing for your area.

If the soil outside the hole is crap, you’ve just created a slow growing elderberry. In my extremely limited experience, soil quality has a tremendous effect on growth rate of elderberry. And you didn’t wet the cardboard. Everything looks lovely above ground. But everything below the cardboard is not well.

Hello from Michigan. I had some tiny potatoes that I left in my garden last year. They came up this year. I had an 18 and a 16 ounce russet,that was absolutely perfect. I got 10 pounds out of a handful of tiny spuds ,that I didn't even plant this year. They are still growing. I can't wait to see what else I'll get. I love your channel. Thank you!!

My own recipe is very similar to this but I also throw in 2 carrots and a jar of my home made stewed tomatoes with my blend of Italian herbs. I let the soup cool down then liquify everything in my blender. Return to the pot and continue cooking until it is nice and thick. The pulp and skin add more natural sweet flavor and thickens on it's own. I do not add as many onions, just one large Vidalia. Sorry but if I needed it thicker I would add tomato paste not flour..

Looking to get my potting bench going- have an old *solid* styrofoam bench on casters that was from a retail promotional display. Weird base but I’d rather use it than send to a landfill. It’s perfect counter height. Added a couple 18” square floor tiles to the top for a durable work surface. I may get real fancy and cut out a square for a rinsing sink fed off the garden hose, with the drain hooked up to the garden bed. Anyway, happy gardening!

I don’t know exactly WHO needs to APPROVE it. I have used flour and cream and butter for years and have killed no one. Do not let those do-Goodyears rule your life sometimes one’s own brain is a much better source to rely on. BTW I’m 79 years old and still kicking. Real high. I have seven quarts of tomato soup on the stove as I’m writing this. Also, butter seems to really mellow out the flavor. Awesome!

Those are some great ideas! I have had my sieve for a long time and I am pretty sure it was passed down from my mom or grandma. There are a couple options on Amazon that are similar. From time to time, I have seen some at Goodwill or other thrift stores that are more like the one I have. My other canning tools have been purchased from a variety of different places. We have a local store that sells some canning items and I have bought some things there. I have also picked up a few things on Amazon. This is a link to a video I created about canning supplies a while back and some of the Amazon links that are the same as what I picked up or similar. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/rcCietF3mN6pfoU.html Good luck on your canning adventures!

Hi, found your video, my hubby and I love pea pods/snow peas, I sautee them with garlic. Is there a way to add them to canning jars, in water to preserve them long term? We planted some good quallity seeds and they are doing great but we want these when harvested for future use. Is it not feasible to process them this way?? Can you please advise..I think you for any help with this.

Thank you for stopping by. That sounds like a great way to eat your snow peas. I have never canned snow peas. My understanding is that the shell will not hold up when canned and will break down and be mushy. It is possible to can shelled peas however. In that case, you won’t have to worry about the shell and the peas hold up fairly well. Good luck with your great harvest!

Can tuna fish ( albacore) be dehydrated?
@BloomingWildwoodHomestead
@BloomingWildwoodHomestead Жыл бұрын
This is also something that I have not personally done. What I read is that you can dehydrate tuna packed in water, but not tuna packed in oil. The oil can cause it to turn rancid.
