i moved into an old house with an open fireplace. I've been told there is a "back boiler" which heats the water and radiators when the fire is lit . There is a switch which apparently pumps the hot water into the radiators ? The fire is lit i switch on the pump (i can hear bubbling noise) but no warm radiators or hot water . Can someone explain, why not ?

Hello Frank, I haven't heard of that system on an open fireplace before, only on a solid fuel stove (which I have). I can't imagine you'd get much heat transfer to the hot water with an open fire as most of the heat would go up the chimney. I advise to install a stove, as you can restrict the flu opening with a butterfly plate, and therefore increase the heat transfer to the hot water jacket on the rear of the stove. You can also adjust the air flow through the stove to alter your burn time / heat output. As far as the pump and radiators go, that really depends on how many radiators you're trying to heat, and the temperature settings on your radiators. If you have a lot of radiators (I have 16) it'll take a long time to heat those furthest away in the heating circuit. You'd need to be burning hot (coal for instance) for a long time before you feel the effects. I have my pump (for feeding the radiators) set to switch on when the water in the pipe reaches a certain temperature. Until that temperature is reached the stove sends hot water up to the tank for the taps. Hopefully something I've said there is useful to you.

i also understand the idea , but i agree there is sometyhing very missleading about this product, every single diagram or mock system shows the open vent well down stream of the boiler output, so it always shows it with a pump position in his favor, however if the hot pipe coming out the boiler went straight to a open vent you could then fit the pump straight after the open vent thus making all the system working on pump flow, ie where he puts the open vent is whats missleading in every bit of video and diagram ive ever seen as his whole buisness is based on pump flow is better than return

I'm not sure what he needs to explain to you bozos. The man has retrofitted a water circulator onto a stove. The stove burns in your living room while the back bedrooms stay cold. The heathero gets placed into a circulation system where heated liquid circulates back into a couple of baseboard radiators and warms the back bedrooms. It makes your wood stove more effective in heating your home. Good job Irish. From your cousin in Chicagoland

Any plumber worth his salt will see a basic mistake in your advice and potential bomb you have created.

Can a solid fuel burner (like for instance a pellet stove - roughly 6 kW) be combined with an indirectly heated boiler (of about 30 L) in an open plumbed circuit without a pump (by way of a thermosyphon) I do not need any radiators (maybe one smaller one for the bathroom) but may plumb in a webasto 5,2 kW hydronic diesel heater. The application is a tiny house on wheels of about 16m2 and 60m3.

Can you make it sealed system

Not the primary from the stove.... but check out NRG awareness. Then look at their NRG link.... using a plate heat exchanger you can go from open to sealed. But primary from stove is on open.

Hiya. Rather than using a sealed system gas boiler, could a regular open vented heat only boiler be used instead and cut out the need for the plate heat exchanger. Cheers

Yea but you don't explain what is in the heat hero, you talk about it sucking and injecting water??? The pump dos that, it seems to me that the heat hero seals and unseals the heating circuit thus creating more pressure??
