If this episode took place today homer probably would have used google translate and then looked up the company

As I kid remember thinking Akira was saying “Hi” to the Simpsons after he said bye one the phone. But I recently watched this episode with CC on and he was saying “Hai”.

There was a Mister Sparkle Simpsons T-shirt at a comic book store. My older sister insisted I spend $25 on it.

The female dogs matched their female owners' personalities perfectly, so Pongo got lucky finding wives for BOTH himself and Roger!

i used to work for a japanese company, they were 100% accurate with that phone call i would hear calls that went "Moshi moshi. Hai, hai, hai, hai." and then a disconnect several times a day

Surprised Akira hasn't ever reappeared in the Simpsons. Feels like a character who needs a few more episodes centered around them

Akira's translation of two short lines of katakana in the speech bubble: He identifies himself as a magnet for foodstuffs. He boasts that he will banish dirt to the land of wind and ghosts. What it actually says: パワークリーン! (pawā kurīn!), or "Power Clean!" 🤣

Plot twist. Akira is actually saying "Hi, Hi, Hi, Bye" on the phone because the person on the other end wasn't responding. Then when Homer walks in he says "Hai" as he is familiar enough to just say "yes" in Japanese as a greeting.

This single scene gave me a lifetime interest in how east Asian languages like Japanese and Korean translate bizarrely when directly translated into English. A Japanese man shout out something when he wins a prize that would translate to English as... " Hey you! Look at me! Watch out! Here comes Ronald Reagan-Mike Tyson! "
