I have a question: if I were to use metal instead of wood for the legs , how do I prevent the table from wobbling ? I’m using a single slab of 4mm wood 80 x 80 with the same style legs

Has he actually done this before, or does he just not have a clue? You can buy proper corner clamps, or just use them sensibly in pairs end to end and side to side.

As you’re glueing opposite 45s into a square you can actually just use 2 clamps (although 4 is recommended), corner clamps aren’t necessary here 🫡

Excellent tutorial. Love the masking tape trick. Very clever. Would love to try making frames for my paintings but I don't have a proper saw. Could you suggest a suitable budget electric saw that would cut 45° angles mitre cuts and is easy to use? I can't manage a hand saw as I don't have enough strength in my arms.

No concerns about wood movement in the lid Vic? I mitred a piece in a similar fashion and it moved a mm and caused me grief.
@DownUnderWoodWorks
@DownUnderWoodWorks 14 күн бұрын
@@mrboics no not really mate. I’ve never had that issue with any of my builds and particularly in pieces that small (I think it’s more of a problem for northern hemisphere makers who have scared the rest of into thinking it’s a huge issue) 😂

Interesting. I'm based in Melbourne and a 35cm wide piece of pine move quite a bit for me. It may have been poorly dried in the first place though..? I rebuilt the piece and it's now a loose panel within a mitre. Don't take my word though, I'm pretty inexperienced compared to you!

Great Video and thanks for posting, people don’t realise the time it take to prepare timber for the build, I know I am surprised by how long it takes me and it was great to see how you go about it. I love repurposing old timber and giving it a new life. Very beautiful box by the way, great mitres and a great hinge fit!, I do have a question being unfamiliar with lasers - I have a small cnc machine where I need to clamp down the wood to ensure stability during the cut, but did I see right that when using a laser there is no need to clamp down your project? Many thanks Brenton
@DownUnderWoodWorks
@DownUnderWoodWorks 15 күн бұрын
Thanks very much Brenton, the amount of work that goes into making something is rarely evident in the finished piece. Yes, when engraving with a laser the piece doesn’t need to be fixed down because nothing is actually touching the piece other than the laser beam. Sometimes when cutting components out it may be necessary to hold things down, just depends on the task and material though.

Thanks mate, that lid came out awesome and it wasn’t until I waxed it that I saw it myself. The dimensions for the box were given to me by our friend, they were based around the ashes container that is given to the next of kin by the crematorium and she wanted to add a few of his small personal things in there too.
