I love my Olympus 17mm f1.8. It is not a replacement for a zoom. I use my Lumix 12-35mm f2.8 more, but for lightweight and super-discrete walk around, especially in a mix of lower light, the Oly is a superb choice. In addition, the manual focus clutch makes the Oly 17 a pure joy to use.

There is not a single moment when I'm not using exposure compensation in aperture priority mode. I find it very useful when the camera's suggestion for the right exposure isn't necessarily correct (90% of the time), and yes, there isn't a right exposure for everyone, we all have different preferences and we are all looking for a different effect etc.

Kudos for this video! Geometry, basic math, optics, and Photopills, all agree with you, and your experiment brilliantly demonstrates how to make meaningful comparisons between systems. When comparing at equal aperture diameter, instead of equal f-number, you are absolutely right, there isn't any difference in depth of field and noise. Regarding low light performance, it is in fact in good light that smaller sensors are at a disadvantage because the base ISO is usually comparatively high and as a result, the best dynamic range isn't as good as on larger sensors. For instance, the Fuji GSX 100 II has a measured dynamic range that is almost identical to the DR of the Pana GH7 over the whole range of comparable ISO (ISO 800 to 12800 on GSX, ISO 125 to 2000 on GH7), the GH7 has a clear advantage above that, while the GSX has an advantage at lower ISO. That said, as you pointed out, lens selection, availability, and cost, are the main differentiators, and for many genres, the selection for full frame is more appealing.
@MyPhotoJourney
@MyPhotoJourney 11 күн бұрын
Thank you very much for your excellent message and sorry I haven't responded sooner. Perhaps I should do a similar video on the comparison for dynamic range, which might be an interesting test. Thanks again for watching and your comment.

I'm happy to be told otherwise, but I think your maths is wrong. M43 has a 2x crop compared with full frame. So if a full frame lens is 34mm then the equivalent M43 focal length would be 34/2=17mm. The Nikon APS-C has a 1.5x crop compared with full frame, so the equivalent focal length would be 34/1.5 (or 34x2/3)=21mm (to the nearest whole number). Similarly, an equivalent APS-C f stop to the M43 f4.2 would be 2.1x1.5=f3.2 (to 1 decimal place).

@roykennie92

Think of it this way, FF = 24mm, APSC ( Nikon , Fuji ) would be 16mm, M43 would be 12mm. Therefore to get APSC equivalent from M43 you need to multiply by 1.33 ( 12 x 1.33 = 15.96 ). Thus a 17mm equivalent on APSC would be 17 x 1.33 = 22.6mm.
@Whywas6scared
@Whywas6scared 17 күн бұрын
@roykennie92 Yes, that is what I am saying, except that I related it back to full frame as a kind of middle step. For some reason though, I wrote 34/1.5=21 (to nearest whole number), when in fact, as you say, it is 22.7 (rounding up, sorry to be pedantic).
@MyPhotoJourney
@MyPhotoJourney 17 күн бұрын
I was tempted to check it again, but didn't because a few have corrected me. What I think was in my favour was that I also multiplied the aperture and as you originally said would make little difference anyway 🙂

I had what I call the kit lens, the 14 to 42mm, until the internal ribbon cable snapped, it,s a common fault apparently. Having watched all the glowing reviews for the 12 to 40mm I opted for a mint used one. The reviews were justified, a superb optic. Kept a 20mm and 45 mm primes for low light, that,s all I need, Pen camera for backup to EM1 Mk2, all lightweight and it matter,s at 69!

Take aways: - nowadays smartphone's night mode technology performs excellently, especially combined with a tripod, thanks to 30 pics stacking - the results of this video are not really reliable since no timer was used on neither of the devices. I saw the devices moving when the shutter was pressed. If a timer had been used, either the dslr would have outperformed the smartphone, or the smartphone would have outperformed the dslr even more. We will never know. What a pity.

I still don't get it. They're no smaller than an A6400 for example and only 60 g lighter. Poor depth of field, poor low light, not at all cheaper. I love Olympus and had a bunch of OM1-4s. Took them all over the world. I think APS-C is the sweet spot. I can't understand why Olympus could not have produced an APS-C camera just as small. After all, an APS-C sensor is smaller than 35 mm film frame. Yes, the lenses woukd be slightly larger but hardly an issue. I had a GH-4 for about 12 months and it was a frustrating experience.
