Thanks for this Emily, | feel by watching, I've shared in a form of therapy! I've often thought that if I'd thrown myself wholeheartedly into my drumming as a career, that the hardest thing to cope with would have been the uncertainty of where the next job was coming from. I feel to hear you voice your experiences and your frame of mind towards them has been uplifting - thank you,

Absolutely a delight to listen to your answer. It certainly hasn't been the easiest way over the last 2.5 years but I wish I would have focused on Rudiments, Stick Control and Syncopation, then transporting it to the whole kit, and holding those sticks the right way. I think I will be doing those things now for the rest of my life. I love setting the metronome to 2 beats then 4 in one then 5, 7 or 9 in 2, I.e. conditioning my internal clock. I grew up in a cult, that's a long time gone now. All I can say is I am constantly criticising myself. Great for learning drumming but hard for communicating, even thought I can appear to commucate well. It's just hard. Anyway great video as always, thanks.

Thanks so much for the amazing comment, and I find that hindsight is a beautiful thing, but actively deciding right now to focus on heading in the direction you want speaks more volumes than anything else. Also, thank you for sharing about growing up in a cult - I can only imagine how traumatic that must've been and I'm in awe of the fact you are out of it and clearly moving in a positive direction to the person you want to be. MASSIVE kudos to you! Keep being awesome, and let's keep pushing forward (even if it is a little uncomfortable at times!)
@onikn91383 ай бұрын
@@EmilyDolanDavies Even though the effects of growing up that way will stay with me for life, im cool with the journey i'm on now. Since you're interested in cults, here's a little of what I went through. The cult I was in believed the end of the world was going to happen soon. At one point we were told to keep a bag under the bed ready to flee to "The place of safety", I.e. Revelation of the Bible. We had no Easter, Christmas or Birthdays and no socializing with "outsiders" even family. That sounds weird to say as it's was so controlling. My parents were "leaders". I didn't believe most of it from a very young age. For some reason I held to the thought the world was going to end and I would get to be saved until I was about 20. I'm 50 now and cool with life being a wonderful mystery. Drumming for me has been such an unexpected gift late in life. Thank you for your great videos and all the best till next time Emily.

LOOK is an absolute beast. You smashed the heck out of the drums on that album and you should be so damn proud of it. I'm a massive fan of the Darkness and have been since 2004 (20 fookin years) 🔥

I love that you can take an analytical view of such a crippling mindset that we all go through. Pretty much all the creative people I have got to know absolutely crucify themselves with negative self talk.

We need ACTIVE NORMALISATION on a shirt! Prioritising others over yourself runs deep though 😢
@EmilyDolanDavies4 ай бұрын
Yes!!!!! ACTIVE NORMALISATION! And yea put yourself first my friend... I'll try to do the same... it's tough!
@edmasi5 ай бұрын
I'm the same. I like listening to solos. But for me, I have no interest in them to work to normalize(ise) in my playing. They only time I like doing them is when I'm kidding around with friends. haha. But we also absorb more than we think from solos & surprise ourselves during fills. Being off the kit now (🤒), you have me thinking a lot about the life/emotional connection to playing and how playing (or boxing) can work miracles for our physical and emotional well-being. Always excellent, Emmers!

Cool video 👍 yes being creative/original is pretty hard and eventually does involve you being the boss of final decisions and standing by what you think is and isn't good (essentially putting your feelings on a pedestal above others)
@EmilyDolanDavies4 ай бұрын
Thanks so much, and yea it can be hard indeed, however there is something very empowering about standing by something you've done and going 'yes, this is good, I like this'

It's been awhile since I created something with your drum stems, sounds like you are more mindful in your playing flow... any improvised stems recorded? Thanks for the video!
@EmilyDolanDavies4 ай бұрын
Hey Jim, always love what you do with the stems, so yes, always do more :-) As for the improvised sessions, I don't have any of those recorded to release, only to create little snippet videos for the ol' socials, mainly because I don't want people to have to spend 30 mins sifting through what is mainly unusable randomness (in my opinion at least! Ha!) but maybe I will do a few more improvised packs - might be interesting to see how people use them :-)

You are so hilarious! So much good and helpful knowledge too! I should normalize(ise) soloing. I am not a solo drummer. I learned one of Neil Peart's solos when I was a kid, but I could never improvise, other than fun fills. Thank you for bringing my brain back to this. Everyone loves Emmers! Makes me so happy every time I get to listen to you. Merry (Happy) Christmas!
