But why would people use the transparent white? It’s too translucent
@HaveColorWillTravel29 күн бұрын
@Wowwwzaaa for the very reason I speak to and demo in this video-to avoid creating opacity in a color you are wishing to tint. Titanium white (PW6) is the most opaque of all paints, so mixing it with any color immediately creates a pastel-like version of the original color. Sometimes that’s what you-covering power and the softness of pastels-but sometimes not, especially when working with transparent colors! It’s likely why it’s call “Mixing White” in some acrylic paint brands, to help folks understand its purpose. For watercolor, mixing white (a less opaque white) is typically called Chinese White. In both cases, the pigment code you want to look for a mixing white is PW4. Hope the difference & purpose is clearer for you-mixing white, unlike titanium, is rarely used on its own:)

It's usually not recommended to use these on textured paper. Have they been clogged or damaged by using it on paper that has 'tooth'?
@HaveColorWillTravel2 ай бұрын
@gunsmokeandghouls , I have had no trouble using Rotrings on watercolor paper (haven’t felt the need to use them on really loose fibrous paper like construction paper). But, I am very attentive to my nibs-cleaning them periodically as I work if I see any fiber collecting on the nibs. I love the line they create on the paper I love, so it is worth the effort for me. I also have a “light touch” according to those who’ve watch me draw, so perhaps with a heavier hand there’d be a bit of a problem there. And I mention those things in this video-with care and attention, these pens are awesome on watercolor paper.

Thanks for this comparison. About what to do with leftover paint on your palette and toning down your colors: At the end of your painting session transfer all the leftover paint to a lidded jar and mix them up. Keep adding to this jar, day after day. This becomes a "mother color". When you want less garish colors than what comes out of the tube add just a tiny touch of Mother to each of the color piles that you will be working with.This tones down to colors slightly and makes them harmonize with each other because they now have a bit of every color. BTW, it looks like you have mold growing in your stay wet palette. Try putting a couple of Lysol Wipes under the clean sponge to prevent mold from developing.
@HaveColorWillTravel2 ай бұрын
Making a “parent color” (that’s the term I gave to this practice) is something I love to do when working on a painting! Thanks for bringing up that option:) And, I know all about mold growth in moist palettes (learned that one the hard way😝), but that coloration in this video is residual staining from previous painting sessions-I use sta-wet palette paper for as long as possible before letting it dry out and then using it for collage fodder or to cover a handmade sketchbook. Maximizing my materials is a big focus for me-art supplies are so expensive!🤑

Good afternoon! Could you please tell me if the caps of isographs of different nib sizes are identical inside? Can you use the cap from a 0.2 isograph with a 0.5 isograph? Thank you!
@HaveColorWillTravel4 ай бұрын
Good morning:) On the Rotring I have (sizes .2 to .6), each cap is labeled at the top with its size identifier, which suggests that they are not interchangeable. But I looked carefully at a .3 and .5, and to my eye the inside is the same rubberized inner barrier on each, so my best guess that with sizes that are relatively close to each other, the caps might be interchangeable. BUT that is just a guess, so keep that in mind! Thanks for the interesting question-I’d never examine their caps closely before!🤓

the isograph 0.35 is my all time favourite drawing pen, i adore the fine lines i can get with it. My biggest issue with these pens is that the barrel always eventually cracks, sometimes to the point where some of the threads actually crack off and the barrel wont stay on the pen at all. It's exceedingly frustrating.
@HaveColorWillTravel4 ай бұрын
They do make may favorite lines also! But I agree-their design is fragile. I opt to use my Rotrings exclusively in my studio space-they don’t travel with me or get put in anything but the case they came in because I just don’t trust the design to hold up to the rough and tumble-ness of life. I’m even super gentle when twisting their caps off and on for the exact reason you mentioned-the threads don’t seemed designed for anything but the lightest touch. Frustrating, yes, but still LOVE the lines I can get, so they are still my faves!

Do watercolor crayons leave a residue if you use them this way? Or do they wash away like the pencils?
@HaveColorWillTravel4 ай бұрын
Watercolor crayons are a bit tricky, and my suspicion is that it is due to their waxy nature. If you were sketching with a super light touch AND coming back to these lines fairly quickly with your paint or water, it *might* not give you any trouble. But in my experience, even having to set aside a piece of work for a day (which, let’s be real, often has to happen), the crayon lines set into the paper or canvas in what I find to be an unhelpful way. Watercolor pencils (at least the ones I use in this video) don’t have that issue. Long answer to say be careful with watercolor crayons when it comes to creating under drawings🙃

Believe it or not, I watch this video, to avoid to buy Makers Cabinet FERRULE.. I mean I have an itch getting it, but the pricetag holds me back... I do a lot of sketching with either Graphite pencils or Red Chalk pencils mostly and in the same time, I like to write with pencils... Never had an issue, ordering an art supply, Makers Cabinet FERRULE is both hard to get and hard to avoid. I'm a freak about control/precision and that tool II'm sure it provides that, improbving the superlightweight pencils control,linework and handwriting is going to look way better.if it only cost half that price!!
@HaveColorWillTravel4 ай бұрын
I was unfamiliar with that product until your comment had me searching for info on it-it is incredibly expensive! For me, a pencil extender helps my colored pencils have longer life, and art supply I use for extended periods of time-I don’t see something like Makers Cabinet’s Ferrule helping me there as its extender is considerably heavier than the Derwent (much more economical) version and would definitely create hand fatigue. But I’m happy to know if its existence-thank you for that!
@greekveteran27154 ай бұрын
Makers Cabinet’s Ferrule is more of an improvment, for sketching and writing, because weight adds control and the thicker grip, also imrpoves the thin grip that graphite pencils usually have. For colored pencils, what you use is far more ideal! so you shouldn't care about it as much as I do! I mean I hope so, because it's expensive. You can literally get a full set of Artist great color pencils, with the money it costs!@@HaveColorWillTravel

How difficult is it to change the blade on the T'gaal sharpener? It looks rather awkward from the video, hard to get a screw driver in there. I keep packs of B+D blades (I hope I'm remembering the name correctly) which seem to fit most hand sharpeners, will they fit this brand, too?
@HaveColorWillTravel4 ай бұрын
Gosh, I really don’t know! I have yet to need to replace a blade in any of my T’gaals (I have multiple stashed in convenient art-ing spots). The only sharpener I have that comes with blade replacements is the KUM long point (in this video), which I’m almost feeling needs replacing, but haven’t yet. I am not a heavy sharpener-I use a point in a pencil, rotating frequently, until I’m forced to stop working and sharpen-which is probably why I don’t have a good answer to your question.🙃 Looking at my T’Gaal though, it seems near impossible to change out the blade without damaging the sharpener as a whole😕

Aaaaahhhhh I love this and want to make my own now! I’ve never used that paper - why did you pick it? Did you like it? Would you recommend it? As we all know, paper is everything.
@HaveColorWillTravel6 ай бұрын
Sweet! You will not regret the effort, I promise (although do allow for the time-it is not a rush-able process). As far as paper, full disclosure-I love Canson products. I chose this spiral pad because A. Was slightly higher grade than their XL, and B. Was still reasonably priced. I honestly have not found myself fond of everyone’s fave (Arch), so opted for leaning on a brand I enjoy for this resource. For this project I think it’s perfect-it shows granulation well and lifts easily. Would I work on it for a stand alone piece? Depends on what I was going for. It does not hold water long, BUT for this project that was a benefit, especially when having to wait for layers to dry to test a paint’s layering and opacity characteristics. So, short answer-yes, I like it; yes, I would recommend it, BUT only if your painting goals met its limitations, if that makes sense. I definitely prefer it over Strathmore 400 series, which is supposed to be comparable. All Strathmore’s watercolor paper levels have been disappointing imo.

Definitely going have a go at this. I have tried it before, but I think I didn't leave the salt on long enough - too impatient, as usual! I like the way you did a little bit, then left it and came back to it. These bookmarks looked really special in the end. The moral of this story for me? Take your time!
@HaveColorWillTravel7 ай бұрын
Patience is SO hard in life, but even more so with art! When one sits down to be creative the last thing we want to do is wait!🙃 I’m notoriously impatient with watercolor, so how I plan for my impatience is to prep multiples of what I’m trying to do-notice how many bookmark patterns I had in the end? Six! While one was drying I got to keep painting by getting started on the next one:) Still, all needed to dry for a full day to really have the effect, BUT since I had done six instead of one my inner child (that’s always where I feel my impatience comes from) felt satisfied at pausing at the appropriate time. Thanks for watching, and I hope you have fun looking for your own patterns in watercolor!💚

Love that spacey looking one! Why does the salt do that to the colors?
@HaveColorWillTravel7 ай бұрын
It’s super interesting, right?! Salt drags the water towards it, absorbing it (just how salty food makes one thirsty, salt sucks up the water on wet watercolor paper), which is one reason why adding salt to wet watercolor paper & pigment makes patterns. The other thing is that salt interacts with different pigments uniquely, so some colors have very dramatic effects while other colors have minimal effects. What type and quality of paper you use also affects the patterning of this technique. The possibilities with this technique are truly infinite and fascinating, I think!🤓
@lindsey.137 ай бұрын
when it comes to some of those more linear patterns, you could even try inserting/cutting the paper sideways so you can get diagonal lines on your square for some variation!
@HaveColorWillTravel7 ай бұрын
So true! I did glue each square in unique ways to maximize pattern diversity, and I may even write some drawing options (ie. Use left hand, draw without looking, hold writing utensil sideways) to add even more complexity. Anything to distract my overwhelmed brain with simple directives is a win win. Thanks for the suggestion!🤓
