Completely untrue. the Roman army faced new threats like the parthians so they needed to adapt. Strict, packed formations didn't work well against the Parthians and their feared cavalry so the Romans adopted effective, but lighter and cheaper to produce armour, longer spears and swords to deal with said cavalry and plumbata darts that could be thrown longer than Javelins could be as wells as a soldier being able to carry more of them. They also adopted lighter and rounder shields, cavalry of their own and archers. The Late Roman army was generally very effective, only losing in times of great economic upheaval and mismanagement and they would go on to become the backbone of the later formidable Eastern Roman army.

The plain chainmail shirt continued to be used well into the age of gunpowder along side plate, plated mail like bechter, segmented plated mail and krug variants. Chainmail offers sufficient medium level protection while allowing great torso mobility. Horse archers from Poland to China wore them well into the 17ths century. The bulk of the highly successful Polish cavalry of that period was the Pancerni medium horse archer cavalry. These guys worse plain chainmail and wouldn't be caught dead with a breast plate. Munition breast plates were cheap armor for the infantry

I think the biggest disadvantage of slings in warfare is the space needed for slingers to operate. I can’t imagine that learning to use a sling is harder than learning to use a +120lbs longbow. But with the longbow, you can fire a coordinated volley a lot easier.

This dispute over whether the metal end of pili (Latin plural for pilum) bent or not could be resolved by investigating the history of this claim. Did the Roman writers themselves say this was so? Or was this a later claim, perhaps by a Renaissance or modern author?

To use a primitive 60 lb recurve with a thumb release took me months of training, starting with a 20lb bow to get good form and release, and slowly working up as my form and tolerance for pain (from the thumb release) increased. I did get accurate enough to shoot soccer balls or human sized targets quite easily at 50m, and could have a fair chance out to 100m, but past that was pretty tough unless I moved up to a more powerful bow. I do have history with throwing sports, but in comparison the sling took only a few hours to get to the point where I could toss random stones around 200m in the direction I wanted (accurate enough for a massed formation). Also, to get my primitive recurve to shoot accurately, I hand fletch a set of arrows to precise specifications that are tuned to my bow, and if I don't I can get horrible performance. It is a days work to make a dozen perfect arrows, whereas going down to the river with a bucket yields a hundred decent stones in an hour. I killed a snake that was trying to strike my dogs with my sling yesterday at about 20m on the first shot, took the head clean off, with a random stone I picked up from the ground, so even with only a couple of weeks of training I am accurate even under pressure. Also, I can fire off stones much more rapidly than arrows. I do feel the bow is superior in a military formation because it can be fired from confined ranks, and in woods, but unlike others I feel it takes a lot more training and a lot more resources to support. Learning the sling is easy; anyone who understands throwing mechanics can sling, the rotation just helps you get the timing, like your steps in javelin or disc golf throwing, but it is the transfer of energy from your legs through your hips and shoulder to a whipping motion that creates the velocity-- it is not about the rotation, it is like pitching. I would guess a AAA pitcher could easily beat the world distance record for a sling, given I am old and can hit 150mph easily with a variety of sizes of stones and golf balls.

Pneumatic guns have had almost long of a history as real firearms. Now with modern technology we can make some pretty nasty stuff thats cleared to kill deer, wild boar, other things of the like. All done by compressed air and a heavy slug, nothing to scoff at. Most certainly could kill.

The Great Dao companies were predominantly Northwestern, past troops from Feng Yuxiang. Their famous usage of the weapon was not due to anything else- The Northwest was significantly poorer than the rest of China at the time, and the local culture had always been one of violent Byronic Altruism. These troops, previously severely depleted in weapon supply and manpower from the Central Plains War (as the enemies of the Nationalist power at that time), joined the Nationalists to combat the Japanese invasion. Their only weaponry at the time were rough handguns and the great Dao, but the Northwesternese fought on as one of the most fearless of the armies of the time. It must be known that the dynamic in China prior to WW2 was not as simple as Communists versus Nationalists, and not all of the later Nationalist associates would have joined Chiang without the Japanese invasion. There is a reason Chiang lost the war later on, after all, flooding the Yellow River- Huai River region racked up enough kills for him to rival any tyrant of the nation's past.

Honestly the Mongols got lucky China was disunified and would have defeated the Mongols without a problem. China would have been the only ones to defeat the Mongols at the time. Even when China was not unified as one it still took the Mongols a 100 years to do so and the most time consuming and resources to take. China has defeated the Mongols before even long before the Medieval era begin just look at the Han-Xiongnu War 漢匈戰爭 in 133 BC.

Depends on the user. I've played around with slings for about 5 years. Fir most the sling is not a sniper weapon, it is the light morter or light machine gun of the ancient world with cheap ammo. Rapid fire suppression weapon used against large blocks of men and horses. Javalins and bows are better suited to sniping.

Everyone thinks of a black powder made out of potassium nitrate, charcoal and sulfur, but you can replace the oxidiser with sodium nitrate and/or use sugar as the fuel. If you have electricity you can make gun powder with chlorates, nitrocellulose or nitroglycerin, if not you would have air guns, maybe spring guns powered by sterling engines, slingshots, rockets, modern crossbows, and potato canons

Ok, so there were tons of border troops called Limitanei who were cheap and didn't wear armour. Those reenactors on the video are definitely Comitatenses, an elite core that didn't lose any of the quality and prowess of the Marian legions. The reason why Roman Empire fell is because these formidable legions fought each other in countless civil wars way more than any barbarians. And your favorite earlier legions engaged in the same activity during the crisis of III century. There was no drop in quality of troops, rather in effectiveness of the state that employed them.
