There are ten thousand videos going into "why" it happens. Nice to see one looking into why it _doesn't_ happen. I wonder if there's any connection with non-addictive personalities - the guy who really can eat "just one potato chip"

Started running in march this year. I'm 42 years old. My first 5k without stopping was 34 min. Now my PB is 24.34. Currently training for my first half marathon in November.

I'm 29m and doing ~34mins but unfortunately with lots of walking breaks. I think I will focus on pacing and trying to do it straight through, even if slower.

@user-pq7xh4rs5o Injuries are always frustrating, but you are still very young. Take the time to recover, figure out what caused your injury (if it wasn't acute) and adjust when you get back to training. Preventing chronic injuries from training injured will benefit you in the long term even if it's frustrating right now. Like all things distance running, short term pain (resting) for long term gains (pain free productive running later).

Im 48yrs old weighing in at 102kg, I've taken up running since Jan 2024, twice a week. I would definitely be considered a beginner. My fastest 5k so far is 34.07. I've added another run in my week to hopefully reach my target of sub 30min, I would love to do that without losing too much mass. I'm exactly 6ft, I know I could lose more pounds, would love to stay around the 95kg - 100kg weight range and still run 5k at sub 30min. Excited to hit that goal.

I just know how I like my body in terms of ability and appearance. Has nothing to do with weight per se but I've noticed I run faster the less visual weight I have regardless what the scale says. Bulk gets in the way once you start moving.

Hi Thanks for the video. Im a long distance runner. For the last year, I got a problem with my left leg. After running a certain distance (sometimes happens at 6 km or 8 km my calf and all the mucus beneath it starts to freeze) I went to many sport clinics and they weren't able to figure out what is the problem. Most of them focused on doing MRI for my left knee and lower back (eventually both were good), I have done shockwaves, dry needles, therapy sessions on my calf...etc. so many things but nothing worked out. So I decided to figure it out myself, since many of those clinics try things on you without figuring out the root problem. And what I have noticed is that I have actually an imbalance when I walk or run ( from my left leg) and now I think that because of that, and while running, eventually it puts much stress (accumulated stress) on my calf while running which caused it eventually to freeze. My Question is :- what do you think about my case since i can see that your video might have the solution to my problem? Thanks

Keep in mind that these times are of those that finished a 5k. If you finished a 5k race, you are already ahead of the bell curve. Average adults do not participate in 5k races. Anyone who finishes a 5k race, I say well done!!

I second the motion. I overheard someone talking the other day while a local race was going on about "how embarrassing would it be to finish last?" And the adage that "you're lapping everyone on the couch" really rang true to me. She was worried about the wrong thing. Even if you finish last in a race you're still ahead of everyone that never showed up for themselves in the first place and that's a lot of people.

Can I ask, I have a very high arch (the arch doesn't evne show up on a scan i did at a shoe store) but I'm pretty sure I'm also over pronating... My shoes even get worn out on the inside of the shoe... What should I think of? Thanks!
@Solpri
@Solpri 2 ай бұрын
Two somewhat different items to address. It depends on the severity of how much the inside of your shoe is wearing down compared to the outside. If it's a lot, then you might look for a Shor with medial posting (stability shoes for overpronating). They have stiffer materials to help the inside not wear down as fast. Separately is your high arch situation where if you aren't getting any kind of pain, you might be fine without any intervention. But looking at a higher posted arch support to go with your shoe would be an option. The trick being pairing the two together and seeing how you run with the combination to determine if you need stability or neutral shoes with the arch support, or no arch support at all.

@@Solpri My arch never hurts, I've never had any problems really... I just know my ankle/foot is overpronating and I'm not sure if that's what makes the back of my knees hurt on longer distances :(
@Solpri
@Solpri 2 ай бұрын
@peachwow2017 potentially. Overpronation can also mean your knees are going to turn inward too much and cause stress as well which could result in the knee pain. Not a 100% guarantee, but I'd probably approach your situation using a neutral shoe with an arch support and see how things go. The arch support should hopefully correct some of the alignment issues the overpronation might be causing to prevent the knee pain. A sports physical therapist would be your best bet if a simple arch support and shoe swap don't fix your situation. They'll be able to look at your biomechanics to diagnose what needs to be strengthened and how to keep you healthy long term.
@peachwow2017
@peachwow2017 2 ай бұрын
@@Solpri thanks a lot for your time buddy, I’ll be looking into a neutral shoe, but aren’t there shoes with built-in arch support? Like Those stability shoes for regular over pronation? My arch never hurt, only the back of my knees unfortunately Sorry for my english, i’m from sweden
@Solpri
@Solpri 2 ай бұрын
@peachwow2017 At least in the US, the vast majority of running shoes do not and never have had any arch support. The "support" is in the foam of the shoe, it doesn't actually support your arch. An arch support feels like pressure pushing up under your foot. If you've never worn any, once you have you will immediately understand the difference.

Interesting video. I like the positive spirit, this is what running is about - a place for everybody and anybody, no matter the age, experience or fitness. I've been running for 13 years quite consistently, but in 2024 increased the duration of my runs by quite a lot. My longest run before 2024 was 15.5 k and anything beyond that felt completely impossible. Now, I ran four half marathons this year. Really proud of this leap after having a set running volume for so many years. I run around 120-150 km a month now, up from up to 50 km a month previously. My pb 5 k time is still from 2020 tho with 23'19 (this year 23'27). Hit my pb 10 k time this year with 51'49 and managed one sub-2h half marathon. I would like to improve my 5k time and 10 k time still (to below 50 min would be great) but I wonder how much room for improvement I have since I'm 38 and have already been running for a while. Not sure when age comes into play more and more... But even if I cannot improve on the times, I'm just happy to run.
