British always say in answer to "how are you" - "Not too bad" - in the US they say "Great" or some other positve. I guess the implication in Britain is that it is always bad, so if it's not too bad, it's good !

The Carey Grant part is wrong. Carey spoke naturally with his regional British accent. This is attested to by his wife. His quasi transatlantic accent was for screen use only. There are accounts of his early attempts at broadway being held back by his regional accent until he learned to change how he spoke.

French is still a global reference language because all the international organisations keep french at least as a second language like if english was not enough to be trusted like this. The more noticable is about the international court of justice, the prefered language is still french despite english domination overall

A great video Gideon. I live in Italy, came over late 70s and retired about five years ago. So do the Maths. I agree with everything you said about ESL abroad and like you, I’ve always really enjoyed it despite the poor pay and conditions at times. The connection with people from a different culture , the fun we had in the classroom, and the immense satisfaction in seeing students master the language over a period of time. Devnagari is not a language, It is a script (alphabets) in which Hindi is written. And, the mother language is Sanskrit (Sanskrit has its own script/alphabets). Hindi evolved as a simple language for common folks (as Sanskrit is a perfect language, that is what it means), and Devnagari was developed as a simpler script/alphabets so common folks can write.

I am not a native speaker and I am definitely not in a teacher profession. Online, I sometimes find myself arguing about politics (especially international politics) with people from western English-speaking countries. There are times when they derail the topics by criticising my English; one even confidently said it is clear how I struggle with it. Of course, they try to get under my skin. But, as imperfect my English is, I know it is more than proficient. I only struggle when more niche technical words and terms are involved. It is so obvious that they are angry. They are angry because I know more basic facts about their country more than they do about mine and I refuse to coddle their Anglo-western sense of superiority. And it is worsened by the fact I confidently argue against them.... using their native language.

All the Indians I have met abroad have a wonderful knowledge of English's grammar, vocabulary and spelling. They truly make an effort and I respect them enormously. The Indian guy is not representative of English speakers in India. He speaks with a Hindi accent.

As the most widely spoken, second language, the English language belongs to the whole world. All that matters, imo, is that it should be intelligible to any careful listener with a reasonable level of English comprehension. The variety of accents in Britain, alone, in the days before radio and tv homogenised them somewhat, was greater than any differences, worldwide, now. I’m pretty certain that, say, aJapanese ESL and a Brazilian one, at a similar level, would have less trouble communicating than me (aged five) and my newly-found, Geordie, holiday friend did in 1949. We grew up within 100 miles of each other yet our accents were totally different.

You people discussing about English but, when any language people speak another language it will different pronunciation to native speakers.
