It has 20 lines on vernier but marking is 1 to 10 by leaving one line. It gives us two options for least count. First option = pitch divided by 10 divisions = 1mm divided by 10 = 0.1mm 2nd option = pitch divided by 20 divisions ( including those lines which are not marked on vernier caliper) = 1mm divided by 20= 0.05 mm least count So 2nd one is more precise least count so we use 20 lines vernier caliper.

If your spherometer is well adjusted and plane glass plate is 100% horizontally placed then A reading would be zero.

A is first reading. If zero of vertical scale coincides with zero of circular counter then first or initial reading is zero. Then for second or B reading you have to rotate circular counter. In case of convex lens it will move upward and in case of concave it will move downward. Then you can measure the difference.
