I am someone who does this work professionally. As the video describes the distances between the loopers and needles is critical. However, the advice given does not relate to any timing adjustments and may prove unreliable for different scenarios. Adjusting the lower looper from the point shown will change the radius of its arc. This alters the geometry of how the needles and loopers can interact and potentially builds a situation where other settings can't be comfortably positioned in relation to the looper. A 'safer' location to adjust from would be at the base of the lower looper support where the piece connects to the rotating shaft. This position allows movement of both distance to the needles and timing, without changing the geometry. The upper looper adjustment shown can be an ideal way to correct some issues. However, forcing the position with pliers may wear down the grip holding the upper looper in place. A better approach would be to remove the upper looper converter mount at the top of the upper looper shaft and loosen the screw holding the upper looper in place. Care must be taken on a machine like the one shown as the looper's inserted depth is also important. Using needles one size larger can be an easy method for temporarily working around issues arising from improper distances. A common failure that can appear as a timing issue is a slipped upper looper projection. This can mean the upper looper collides with other parts or doesn't pass over the needles correctly. The adjustment is from the base of the upper looper arm where it connects to the rotating shaft.

Thank you so much. Although I have a different type of serger this was the most helpful and my machine is now working again. Had the upper looper in wrong position. That's done. Now my machine is snagging the fabric although I changed the needle. Maybe it need some fine tuning.

Any ideas on how to correct a skipped stitch? Top left needle is not catching upper looper thread. In slow motion it looks like the top left needle thread is catching on upper looper. I have Juki MO-134
@nickrobinson9629
@nickrobinson9629 2 ай бұрын
Most likely the reason the upper looper thread isn't catching is because the lower looper thread is also not catching. The reason the upper thread gets dropped despite wrapping the needle is because the lower thread is needed to lock the stitch together. If you check the space between the lower looper and needles when each needle is directly in front of it, you may find the left needle is further away. The fix can be a little complicated but as a work around you can try using a needle one size larger.

Mine keeps hitting each other since the upper looper is at front the lower looper 😂 now I know why it doesn't work.

Hello, I have a problem. I bought a new owerlok machine. It broke down after two months. The service center said that it was my fault because I used the wrong lubricating oil. I don't agree with that because I used sewing machine oil to lubricate it. I realized that the problem was something else. That's why I searched KZfaq for videos that could help me. That's how I came across your video. The problem with my owerlok is that the lower looper on the way to the top position for some reason bypasses the upper loop and comes in front of the upper loop and naturally blocks or gets stuck. The correct course is that the lower looper move behind the upper one. I hope you understand what I mean. If you could help me solve this problem, I would be very grateful.

Thank you! I found your simple explanation of where the lower and upper loopers need to be at the lowest and highest point of the needles to be exactly the information I needed to get the timing on my Juki BabyLock Proline BL4-838D working. (I put in the model number for anyone else wanting to time this model - although your explanation works for other models too.)

This was so helpful! I really appreciate the clear explanation. I already spent $100 to have my $200 serger fixed once, issue was timing was off, makes no sense to spend that kind of money again. Thank you for helping me help myself! And you know what? 8 years after you posted this video there still aren’t good videos about loopers and timing…yours is the best I’ve seen!

Sadly the screws at mine are fixed very tight. I can not move them at all and loosen them. Please does anyone know how I could loosen the screws? How tight do they have to be fixed after the adjustment? I would be very happy if someone would have an idea to help me solve my problem. I already had it at a professional for repair and he could not fix it. So I did spend a lot of money for nothing. Thanks a lot for posting this! In your video I can see it better than in my old baby lock.

Hi Thank you - I'm going to look at the loopers now. My stitches are ok for about 4-6 inches then alternate from very loopy at the back to ok and keeps reoccurring. Am I correct in thinking this could be a timing issue ? Thank you

Hey Jasmine, just wanted to say thank you for posting this video. It enabled me to diagnose my looper issues. When I started digging into it, I found there are actually two adjustment screws that give you more adjustment for the timing. On the upper looper inside the post it’s mounted to, is a very small Allen screw. If you loosen that screw you’re able to adjust the position of the upper looper. For the lower Looper, behind the thread guide is another small Allen screw. Loosen the thread guide and drop it out-of-the-way and you’ll see the small Allen screw. you’ll notice as you loosen or tighten it, the angle of the lower looper moves in and out. I’d never have found those screws without your video, so thanks again!
