I have a couple of small flashing lamps about the size of a€2 coin and twice as thick. They can be clipped onto your backpack or held in your hand. I brought them in the UK from Alpkit but I am sure you can get them elsewhere. They weigh very little and are visible from a good distance.

Hi, a fellow Aussie, 56 just at the research stage. Have found many answers except about food, I'm VERY intolerant to gluten and milk products and wondering if I'll have to go to expensive restaurants to eat? I don't need special gf food, just meat or fish and salad or steamed veg, or rice, corn tortilla, fruit etc. Thoughts? Thinking about the Portuguese and CF routes.

You’ve piqued my interest. I finished my second Camino Frances in May and love walking at 6:30 AM or earlier. I’m always amazed by the birds and look forward to the sunrise. My next Camino was going to be from Porto, and I was considering adding the Ingles. Now, you've got me interested in the Via de la Plata! How does its infrastructure compare to the Frances? Thanks for the reply!

The VdlP is very different to the Frances. (1) It's longer ... 1,000 kms. (2) Some of the stages can be longer with no means of making them shorter. Though I managed to keep under 27 kms. (3) There are few intermediate stopping points, cafes etc. So you usually carry all your food and water for the day. (4) There are not many other Pilgrims, so great if you like solitude This video might be of interest. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/hLehktNhkpvbqXU.html And I have a daily blog here. robscamino.com/category/camino-via-de-la-plata/

I think in the Sarria to Santiago chunk it's basically required if you want to have a good experience. I left one day at 8:30 and it was basically torture wading through hundreds of fellow pilgrims. Next day I left at 6:30 with head lamp and had a stellar day ahead of the wave. I definitely recommend an early start in the last 100km. Obvs this won't be necessary further out.

Rob, thanks for covering pre-dawn starts on the Camino. Certainly, there are some not necessarily downsides to beginning in the early hours, but if you prep properly and practice situational awareness, the upsides, as seen in your video, are numerous and outweigh all the rest. 🤙🏽

I loved it. I only tried it to beat the hottest part of the day, which was 3-4 pm on that route (VdlP and at that time of year) Then I found most other Pilgrims were doing it too! I hadn't seen anyone else really, prior to starting early.

Hi Rob, I did the Camino Francais again last October and started walking every day around 6.00am. Amazing feeling walking in the dark then watching the sun come up. Best morning was walking into Ages with a full moon , turned off my head torch and walked by moonlight. Magical. I also put reflective tape on my walking poles and a strip of tape on the back of my shoes. Good for walking in the dark and also for recognising your shoes when they are in the shoe rack at the albergue.

A reflective pack cover helps the traffic see you. The Spanish police rightfully take a dim view of roadside walking in the dark, speaking from experience... Darkness can hide waymarks and yellow arrows. That said, it is a fantastic time of day to walk. Cool mornings full of birdsong. 'Catching the dawn' is a great feeling. Keep up the good work, Rob.

Yes, it takes a bit of care. I wouldn't do it along a busy road. Where I had to start along a road in the dark, it was always a quiet road where I might only see 1 or 2 cars. Usually none.

100%. On the VdlP you have the sunrise to your right mainly (East) as route mainly heads North. The sun is generally passing behind you to the West. So an umbrella works really well. On the Frances, as you are heading West, the sun rises behind you, and passes to the left (South) and it moves to the West (ahead of you). I always found the left side of my face was getting sunburnt. Till I started taking an Umbrella!

Good question. That's certainly one approach. Some people just check in all their gear. Many people though, want to hang on to their pack, as carry-on, just in case it gets lost or delayed. Poles are easy to replace. But in my case, gear I have collected over 10 years and that is no longer available, would be a loss I would not want.

@robscamino I mixed it up big style back in May. Not intentionally, just took what ever accommodation was left. Be it a bed in an albergue, a private room in a hostel or casa rural. The invierno I think will be my next adventure in Spain. The Frances has become a victim of it's success me thinks.

Becoming very commercial with tour companies, luggage transfers etc etc Sadly I think that all starts to undermine the essence of the Camino. Letting go........trusting in the Camino.........and finding a sense of freedom. But hey, if it helps others walk a Camino that would not have otherwise. Then in my mind that's a good thing. 🙂 That's the great thing about the Camino. There are routes to suit all tastes........ My next one will certainly be more remote. Maybe the Madrid....... I love being alone in the landscape, to just............be. 🙂

@robscamino 14 күн бұрын
True. I get that. I'm a bad sleeper. And I was of the same mind on my first 3 Caminos. But on this last one, I 'promised' myself to try lots of different options. So I tried lots (maybe 20) Albergues. And what did I find? 1. I slept just as well. I've had very noisy private rooms! 2. The privacy thing is really a non issue. Everyone is discrete. Like you, if I stay in private rooms I still meet loads of people. But I found mixing it up a bit was really good. And in many places last time (because of the routes), Albergues were the only options! 🙂 Some Albergues were really memorable, because of the building, location, hosts, other Pilgrims, all manner of reasons. If using private rooms I now try to keep the budget down a bit. Because (A). I need to. and (B). some of the worst nights sleep have been in very expensive places! I have learned that a good nights sleep has nothing to do with how much you pay for the room / bed. i.e. Worst night sleep (160 euro) never again.......... Best nights sleep (10 euro) including a wonderful mountain view!

I am worried about the "alone in a crowd"...I have traveled extensively solo (all seven continents, hundreds and hundreds of days) but there is a massive difference between going to dinner knowing you are going to be solo and being surrounded by a bunch of people all planning a fun evening and not being included (or potentially included as this is a worry more than anything). I also don't want to be included out of pity. All of which, of course, are my own issues but that is my biggest fear about Camino #2 (I did a G Adventures tour for my first one so was always on the same path/hotels with the same people every day)

I think if that is your concern, maybe consider. (1) Staying in Albergues. (if you didn't before) It can make meeting other lone Pilgrims easier.
