I would say that this is inaccurate, as there isn't a literal ocean of hunters writhing around them, but for some reason, the simplicity of the situation amplifies the feeling of struggle. There isn't an imminent danger stopping these two. They are forced to be fully focused on their endeavor to end one another. It is a duel, mano a mano, but a never ending one. Even when blood, sweat and tears will have run out, they will likely still be there, stuck, chasing after one another. They will most likely have forgotten why they were fighting, as one can only go so long repeating the same action over and over again before it loses its meaning, and yet they will keep on fighting. Not out of hatred for one another, not for any ideal that they may hold, but because it feels... Natural. It would seem as if for as long as they had existed, there were chasing each other in this never ending dance death. A dance of death that, intentionally or not, never reaches its denouement. A dance of death that was kept alive, originally by a pure, raw and animalistic will to survive, but that is now kept ongoing by the feeling that it would feel wrong to stop. It is not a form of survival instinct or of better knowledge that forbids them from stopping, but rather the haunting question of "Should I succeed, now what?". They have been chasing after that possible end to their conflict for song long that reaching it now would fill them with a sense of emptiness. They had been focused on putting an end to the life of their adversary so deeply, that they had forgotten what this would bring to them. They had been so involved in perpetuating this ritual or chase and run, run and chase, that with it ending, would come the end of any and all meaning. In a way, these two are connected. Not by a bond such as the state of friend nor of enemy. Not anymore at least. It has gone beyond that. Their relationship has transcended such concepts. Calling it codependency would be doing what we have in front of us a disservice, yet it is the only way I can characterize this situation through words. They are dependent on one another, as each needs to other to continue for them to be able to do the sole duty for which they believe they were born. Whatever it originally was, it has now been forgotten. All that remains is perpetuating this cycle. Indefinitely. Until the end of times. And, somehow, this brings them joy. To the both of them. Inexplicably. Incomprehensibly. And yet, in way, understandably. And for that reason, I would like to thank you, for giving me such an interesting piece of art to examine, rather than to complain.
