I mean he definitely could have caught up to me on that staircase because I would have been stopping to catch my breath every so often. haha! I liked the lights and shadows on their faces during this scene. On the stairs, I did find it a little hypocritical when she yells at him for embarrassing her in front of everyone. She literally just embarrassed him in a lecture hall of people, and it was the second time she had done something like that; the Oxford debate class being the first. I am glad they got to discuss his father's threat before having sex too, clearing the air, but I didn't get a sense she fully understood the extent of the threat. I loved that arm kiss too. He looks so innocent and vulnerable there. It is like his eyes are questioning her for acceptance or reassurance.

This is probably my favorite scene. You can see the exact moment that boy falls for her, it's so beautifully done. I do think the groundwork for this scene was done in episode one though, and very well at that: I think Ruby genuinely surprised him (and thus planted a seed of interest in him) earlier: When she told him she absolutely did not want to be seen with him, in the staircase, when he tried to "seduce" her into an adventure with the "hottest guy in school" (He was SUCH a jerk in the first episode). He has probably never in his life had someone say that and mean it. He looked annoyed but also somewhat intrigued. Plus, after the party in the headmasters office when she had the chance to throw him and Lydia under the bus and didn't. He was up to that point too far up his own *ss to realise it meant he could trust Ruby, but it did make him do a double take. You could clearly see all that in his face and eyes even before he realised it himself. Gosh the acting of these two leads is fantastic, isn't it?

I've been trying to put my finger on what it is that makes me love Maxton Hall so much and I think you've managed to put into words exactly what I feel. It IS a classic love story disguised as a teen romantic drama, and I am all the way here for it.

I think you have summarised in one sentence what I took a whole video to articulate in my head so thank you! The reason I knew that there was something more beyond the surface as to why I liked it was because I wasn't necessarily in agreement with some of the other media that was being recommended "if you like Maxton Hall - you will like this ..." because I think they were all recommending superficial pouty teen dramas with good looking leads which purport to satisfy certain tropes while not ...

I just binge watched all of your videos on Maxton Hall because like you, I can't get this story and these characters out of my head! It is so rare to find good romance movies/tv shows! The classic tropes were executed so well that it did not feel too cliché! I loved the acting of all the actors and particularly the two main leads! Their chemistry ❤ They have a connection that felt so real! As you said, the supporting characters are very interesting as well! Lydia is definitely a stand out! This series was so good that when I finally watched Bridgertons season 3 part 1, I felt that it paled in comparison! Ruby and James have my heartv😁

I think you perfectly articulated why I love Maxton Hall that much compared to typical teen romances! I'm a huge fan of Jane Austen and Elisabeth Gaskell because I love their subtelty, their characters being so well fleshed out and having layers, the way they write love stories. Maxton Hall was able to recreate this giddiness I feel when I watch period dramas! I just love good chemistry, contained feelings, yearning and respectful but passionate male characters! And Frederik Wentworth letter to Anne is just a masterpiece!!!

I am so relieved and happy to read this view from me. My review videos have been so much less popular than my other videos but I think people are kind of focusing on the wrong things for saying why everyone loves Maxton Hall. It's not that the people are pretty (all shows have pretty people, it's not that it's steamy/sexy (almost all shows are these days), it's not just the enemies to lovers (a lot of movies and tv shows try to manufacture that tension these days), it's not just an emotional hero (most New Adult fiction writes men as being more emotional and hormonal than women)... It's that it captures the sort of more subtle, genuinely romantic tone of those old stories that I loved so much ... I know so many people who mistakenly think that Bridgerton is like Jane Austen and I'm like ... so not .. Bridgerton is much more modern and blatant in its sensibilities .. it doesn't have the beautiful nuance and subtlety that I love in my old Austen, Gaskell, LM Montgomery, Louise May Alcott, Georgette Heyer type stories where there is so much genuine understanding, yearning and love from afar before there's a satisfactory resolution. These days a steamy sex scene seems to stand in as a substitute for a genuine conversation ...

Thank you for your analysis, I really enjoy them. You can tell that you have some kind of a background or at least a prolonged interest in this type of assessment and the way you state your evaluations unravel the layers very pleasingly, in my humble opinion 🙏🏻 . Just a comment to add to your train of thought: I have been living in Germany for most of my life now- though I can‘t speak for every corner of the country- it‘s quite a cultural trait here to give woman agency over what they want. At least politically it‘s something that has been established here for decades- which does not mean it‘s practiced everywhere. That being said, I think that the part where Ruby comments on Elaine’s territorial skit (without intervention from James) is something quite common and even standard in some settings. I find it empowering in a way. But that’s just my two cents 😅 Thank you again- somehow the tasteful commentary adds to the feeling of quality while watching the show- this is not usually my type of film taste, but what an exception to the rule 🤩

Thank you! I like this scene too as it really starts to show James that not everyone is after something from the Beaufort despite what his father says. Ruby had a chance to get money she needs/ she could have paid for the wheelchair lift- or a chance to get her recommendation by ratting our Lydia but she doesn’t. Later on in the series when Mortimer makes James break up with Ruby and says she is a golddigger he knows that isn’t true. I’m getting a little ahead of myself but I read the last 2 books by getting an English translation and can’t wait for you to unpack some of those scenes!

I haven't read the books, but I agree with your statement about her turning down Sutton's recommendation being a better show of Ruby's character. Also, we see Ruby say here that she needs to improve. In the next episode, at a committee meeting, Kieran starts to say the incident wasn't their fault, and she says it doesn't matter and kind of shuts him down. You see James in that episode blaming Ruby for his lacrosse suspension, even as Lydia is pointing out he pulled the stupid prank. I think that shows a good contrast to their characters.

I think it’s both but honestly with this conversation I think it’s more about image for Elaine like sure she finds him physically attractive she slept with him but let’s recall back to episode 2 where Ruby drags him saying no one will be ever be interested in him except for his looks and money. Can someone just agree/disagree and tell me if I’m being delusional or not. When she tells him “oh well you can’t win all the time” I think that breaks the ice for him a little bit because that’s literally how we started the episode with his father showing him how to win every game I just found that interesting and wonder if there’s a parallel there. I’m probably just overthinking here but I’ll like to throw the thought out there.
@koalabear6089
@koalabear6089 7 күн бұрын
It's definitely not you being delusional. It makes wheels turn in his head for sure - the voiceover during the golf scene is even him saying - he'd always been taught that someone had to win and someone had to win and someone had to lose but what if both kings surrender to one another i.e. which is kind of what he and Ruby are doing. His father essentially said you have to win at all costs and Ruby reminded him taht there was another way ...

I’m sooo happy they talked things through and he admitted the truth before they slept together. Im glad the writers included that so often in toxic relationship films couples sleep together as a way to forget their issues or sleep together before they do talk about things. Im glad they had Ruby take a step back and waited to get the truth out of him first.
@koalabear6089
@koalabear6089 8 күн бұрын
Oh my goodness you are absolutely right, I was happy that he stopped when he realised she was pulling back from him and I was happy that they talked - BUT you are so right. So many movies/tv shows use the sex scene as a cheat to avoid having to write difficult dialogue. It's almost like sex is the magical solution / short cut and detour to avoid characters having a conversation. I am really happy that when they do have sex - it's following full disclosure. Also, it's good that when he tells her about his father she says: "I'm not afraid of him" which kind of vindicates James' decision to not say anything earlier .. ie she would have just been open about it and there would have been some pretty adverse consequences to not just her but her whole family without a chance to figure out if there was a solution. Thanks for your comment

Interesting I love this. James starts from the beginning as a villain you would say and then you realize how he softens. I still wish he would’ve apologized for his wrong doings in episode 1 & 2 but the actor did an extremely good job in showing how much he cared for her in the later episodes. The acting helped too.

This is one of my favorite scenes too. The little subtleties in facial expression and nuance in language make it so endearing. At first, I was worried about how he was going to perceive an apology. Up to that point, he had been talking about her as an opponent and being at war with her. His character up to this point could have easily seen an apology as a weakness. His father definitely would have. Instead, she seems to disarm him. Maybe, it's the shock of the apology or the budding attraction or both. I doubt he is used to getting apologies, especially from someone he viewed as an opponent. I also really enjoyed when she said, "You can't win all the time." Again, up until then, you only got his father's view of winning (even out of James's mouth). A view that is basically take down your opposition at any cost and losing isn't an option (or its a disgrace). Her statement is nicely juxtaposed to the father's view. From his expression, James seemed to find it either shocking or refreshing too. It is probably this statement that gets him thinking, which led a few scenes later to him saying something like, "I never imagined the third option, a stalemate. When two kings bow to each other showing true power." I know I didn't get that exactly right, but it's the scene at the golf course.

That single tear down his cheek and that look to Percy through his hair. It is just beautifully moving. Someone could have easily been like, "Move your hair out of the way, so we can see your face better." Something about the disheveled look accentuates his statements to Percy. I thought in the English version on Prime he says, "I'm so out of my depth here," but I might be remembering wrong. I also thought this song was a powerful choice for the scene.

@@maureen2703 you've reminded me that I want to do the Lexington office scene. It's often overlooked but it's pretty pivotal as it's definitely one of those moments you can see James is startled by Ruby. As I mentioned in another one of my videos, the antagonistic exchanges serve two purposes - they allow the characters to learn more about one another so that as the barriers do come down - they already know one another although through the lens of antipathy. The battle of wits is designed to heighten sexual tension but also make the stakes even higher when they do eventually surrender to one another and fall in love. So it's not as 'sudden' as people sometimes think when they comment how 'quickly' James falls. This has been building from the start. I think it's also been building from the beginning for Ruby, too but she's probably less obvious about it :D

I haven't read the books yet, because I'm more a fantasy than a romance reader, but once I found out that "Save me" (german title of the first book) is a boarding school romance I was interested. I did the opposite with Culpa Mia and that wasn't the right thing, I should've read the book first. Still, though Culpa Mia (My Fault in English) was a cliche wattpad romance, the movie made it just very fun. But because that was originally in spanish and I speak a bit and can kind of read it, I'm trying to read the other books in spanish, so I relate to casual language studies.

Also yes; Happy Birthday is quite common (at least among people under 40), even singing the song in english instead of german is somewhat common. But it's less that it's just the English version, but usually both. So for a birthday card you'd use both to have more variety, but it's interchangably used. English is taught at every school and not an elective, also English is very much seen as cool, so while we do have our own slang, young people like me are, very much interested in english popculture (watching youtube in english, there are undubbed viewings of popular movies like Dune)
