I remember exactly where I was driving when I was listening to the final game on the radio as a 16 year old driving the streets of Mission Bay.

It’s crazy to think I was at this, all these years ago now. I was probably 6 or 7 yrs old. You could buy the aluminum bats. They were actually just wooden bats pained silver lol. They were selling them in the stadium. I can’t believe I used mine as actual bat as a kid. …

After seeing this video, and having never seen it before, I can safely say here in 2024, 40 years after the fact that Sparky Anderson did in fact outmanage Dick Williams in this series. Also, anyone watching this might be interested to learn that Dan Petry (Detroit's game 2 starter) had a son who plays in the NHL as a defenseman and is quite a good one too, a great skater who produces points from the back end.

The Padres had by far the worst record of the division winners, yet had home field advantage for the entire post season.

Padres have been to two WS in their history (as of the end of the 2023 season), and both times they faced against two teams that are on the list for greatest teams of all times = 1984 Tigers and 1998 Yankees

What surprised me the most that the next time the Padres would have a winning season was in 2004 And the next time they made the postseason was in 2005 (when they almost made it with a non-winning-record) This was mostly because the Padres had a bit of a fire-sale after this 1998 season: This was Ken Caminiti final season with the Padres, as he will sign and return to the Astros in the offseason This was Greg Vaughn final season with the Padres, as he will be traded to the Reds in the offseason for Reggie Sanders Kevin Brown is now a free agent, and he will sign with the Dodgers in the offseason This was Steve Finley final season with the Padres, and he will sign with the Diamondbacks in the offseason.

Padres eliminated the 100+ win Astros in the Division Series. Padres eliminated the 100+ win Braves in the NLCS. But Padres could not eliminate the 114 win Yankees in the World Series. So Padres could have eliminated three 100+ win teams in 1998 Other teams have eliminated two 100-win-teams in the same postseason, but never three = 1988 Dodgers (who won the WS since it was only 2 rounds back then), 1998 Padres, 2001 Yankees, 2004 RSOX Last time a team eliminated two 100+ win teams in the same postseason, was the 1988 Dodgers, when they stun the Mets in the NLCS, and then they beat the Athletics Bash Brothers in the World Series.

On Tony's day he's talking about everyone else. We did not deserve this man. Baseball was better because of him and not because of his records.

Boy this takes me back. Vividly remember going to the local blockbuster and renting this probably a dozen times over the course of my childhood, then coming home with and sitting down on the floor in front of the tv to watch with dad. Thanks for uploading it.

Tigers' batters decimated the Padres' starting pitching. IIRC, the combined ERA for the San Diego starters was over 13. Hard to win when you dig yourself into that deep a hole.

Right before Larry Herndon caught the final out off Tony Gwynn you can hear the Tiger stadium crowd getting ready to erupt. That '84 Tigers team was awesome, They should have dominated the rest of the 80s.

The 84 Tiger were a great club but honestly they should have won more. They did win the division in 87 with a great stretch run but Toronto's collapse was key to their division win

Great year for the Padres, but the Q was a terrible place for baseball after they "Chargerized" it in 1997 and expanded the upper decks. Totally sucked all the charm out of the place.
