Umpires SLOW DOWN.

I umpired high school baseball for years. These umpires are consistently out of position. They are moving when making their calls, which is a big source of errors. Why is the home plate umpire so far away from the plate? Is he afraid of the ball? Umpiring baseball can be tough at times, but these two are TERRIBLE! I played baseball ball since I was 5 years old, and I was taught to umpire by a professional umpire. These TWO ARE HORRIBLE AND SHOULD FIND OTHER THINGS TO DO FOR EXTRA CASH!

"... making the diving catch on the foul ball." The catcher I see when this comment was made is standing. This is the point where I stop watching this rather poor video, but I won't forget to give a thumbs down before I leave.

As of 3:30, I see about 2-3 missed calls. All of the other disputed calls look like balls to me. Pitch at 2:49 comes across the plate at the batter's shoulder and the coach is arguing that it's his belt? There's a huge continuum between calling that crap a strike and the later claim that without these calls, it's just batting practice. You have to throw strikes and strikes are hittable balls. You said yourself that the guy was consistent. So, adjust. Want to limit the walks, then throw strikes. Too bad if the game ends up 8 - 6 instead of 2-1. There's a difference in throwing an unhittable pitch and being an unhittable pitcher. Too many players and coaches want the former and want these junk pitches way low and outside to be strikes. They should be focused on the latter -- changing speeds, developing different pitches, working on form to control breaking balls, etc. I would much, much rather watch an umpire that forced pitchers to throw hittable balls than an umpire that forced hitters to swing at garbage pitches. Umpire is way, way too animated. Don't ask questions to coaches/fans because you cannot control the answers. You don't want a dialogue. It's a losing proposition.

Every pitch is a strike until it's a ball? Uh, that's ridiculous! That zone was a bit tight but most of those pitches I saw even at that bad camera angle seemed to be balls....many too high and low outside...

He can toss you for arguing balls and strikes. I'd have warned you and then ran you the next time. Also, an arguing coach will never change a good ump's strike zone. You'd have a much better shot of change if you hit up his partner in between innings. He might have some sway with the plate ump.

Since it is a thrown ball, the position of the runners at the time of the throw governs what bases they are awarded. The runner on second had already touched third and the runner on first had already touched second. The batter is automatically awarded Third on the two-base award and the other two score by rule.

If that is a rule now days then it needs to be enforced but it is a stupid rule and in my opinion should have never been made. That is the problem with little league anymore. They don't let the kids learn and play the game. Same way they are messing up the Majors with all these dumb rule changes.

That was always my biggest gripe with umpires, particularly in youth baseball. Everything seemed to be a secret and nobody knew what was going on. Few umpires used their voice. The vast majority of the "arguments" with coaches and players was not about the merit of the call ... it was that nobody could ever tell what the call was. And that's exactly what happened in that last clip -- the frustration and confusion wasn't because of the call ... it was because nobody knew what the call was.

What about if the runner on first base steals, then the catcher misses the 3rd strike...assuming less than 2 outs. Does he have to throw to first as the base is now unoccupied?

The first play is clearly a fair ball bounced off the plate and the pitcher touched it clearly in fair territory. The second one I couldn't tell for sure where the pitcher touched the ball because I'm watching on my phone. But it looks like the ball was in Fair territory when he touched it. Again. I'm not positive

As an ump, if you *EVER* yell to a coach that the problem is that the pitchers "can't throw a strike", in front of everyone including one of those pitchers, you shouldn't be umping.

Correct call. It’s too bad though that this means so much in the eyes of parents. In a normal world, the Ump would have discretion to warn the coach and with agreement from the opposing team, could simply not make the call and let the kids play it out. Nothing wrong with the Ump doing their job and making the call. Again, correct call. Just would have been nice to see it not end on an inconsequential action from the coach.

I know its hard not to, but as an umpire you never want to egg on a coach...."why don't you come out here and do it" is not a professional statement. That is a tight zone. Thanks for the extra pitches to see the zone from both sides. If you are being narrow, you need to give that high strike. Technically a ball will strike the zone with an overhang of a couple of inches....so maybe 21" width. I tell coaches and catchers that the ball must cross the plate somewhere, but you will get knees to sternum so use the height.

As the fair-or-foul question was presented initially by the narrator, the correct response would be insufficient information to make that determination. In this instance, it was only after the catcher grabbing the batted ball that a fair-or-foul ruling could be made.

The real question is why did Little League start to allow May 1st kids when it used to be August first. Why does Travel allow and reward over age kids by birthday to play with their grade. That took the mind of an idiot to reward the kids getting held back with xtra time. Sorry you’re 19 before May your senior year. No U18.

If this is really high school, this is some low-level stuff and you are wrong here. These pitchers are absolutely horrible and blaming the umpire for the pitchers' lack of performance is pathetic. The NFHS would absolutely not support any umpire to expand the zone like you are asking. Expanding the zone does many negative things. First, it makes the umpire inconsistent. You are asking him to have a floating zone. I can't see the parents or you liking a zone like that. It's obvious you just want to go home and not be there coaching your kids on ADJUSTMENT, which is literally what baseball is mainly about. You should have been telling your pitcher to drop his butt, stay over the ball, and drive through the pitch. Instead, I see them aiming like he's throwing a dart, looking like garbage and you concentrating on the umpire instead of your kids. Secondly, the batters would have no clue what the zone was. You would see crazier swings at pitches way out of the zone which could lead to more backswing and catcher's interferences. Both of those incidences are potentially very dangerous for the catcher. Finally, expanding the zone would make it unsafe for the batter. Now you will have batters crowding the plate to cover the pitch two or three balls off the plate that is now called a strike. Then the pitcher busts them in. What could go wrong? Furthermore, it has been my experience, that expanding the zone does not help the game time, because then instead of these sorry pitchers nibbling on the corners and missing, now they are nibbling three balls off the plate and missing. As far as you go, a real HS umpire would not tolerate any banter like this across the field. I'd be dumping you for sure and anyone else who wanted to make the game about me, arguing balls and strikes. I'd let the state figure out the fine and suspension, but you would 100% be done that moment you screamed across the field at me about balls and strikes. There is literally no faster way to get ejected, especially in HS where unsportsmanlike conduct is not ever tolerated. I've umpired every level from pro stuff to pinto and did HS for 15 years and there wouldn't be much back and forth like with this guy. Furthermore, if I were the umpire association who has to deal with you, I would send an email to the state to document you downloading this to youtube and arguing and complaining about an umpire's strike zone. You are still, years later, inciting parents and players against this umpire. I'd do my best to get you suspended or fired for this. This is not appropriate behavior for a coach to post this if you truly are a HS coach and in my state you would get consequences for this. The saddest thing is, you and parents behaving like that often results in a player getting ejected because they think they can say something too. I've seen it happen dozens of times. If you and the other coach want a huge zone, you both go to the umpire discreetly and tell him his zone is great and the pitching is horrible... then ask, saying both coaches are on board. Don't show your rear across the field and escalate the situation. Then hope he does it and can be sort of consistent which is virtually impossible. Here's the thing though... you have to adamantly back up the umpire on every call after that... again.. you asked for it.
