Very sad....If only he had just said boat was broken so had to land to repair, Then sailed home as a non contender and could still have written a book and earned money. Suppose it's easy to think logically from a computer chair on land. Shame he chose to die, it's always worth living, Not like he had done some horrific crime, he just failed at something people thought impossible anyway.

There is something Crowhurst is quoted as saying in the docu-drama, that a single-handed sailor attempting a voyage around the world would need a "stable psychology." I think your first instinct is to apply that to what eventually would happen to him. But, if you think about it, he's completely wrong from the outset. No one with a "stable psychology" would attempt a singled-handed trip around the world for the first time. Each one of the contestants was unstable in their own way, I bet even Knox-Johnston was. I bet he was too much of a risk taker. The voyage, age, and the fame probably evened him out.

Just an incredible story. A tale filled with characters that span a wide cross section of humanity. A truly epic story of triumph and a tragedy. It's a Rorschach test too, it's very telling what you take from this story when you hear/see it.

So strange, when Crowhurst said, the boat is not ready, it can be either way: it was at a fundamental level not fully checked, or he himself was not ready. Example? Not enough drinking water onboard is dangerous. But read the book of Joshua Slocum, what you really need is a ship and good enough rigging, and today we got dangerous shipping lanes, so a radar reflector is a life saver, but when large ships are on autopilot only, even that reflector is useless. See? You should concentrate on a solid rigging. When you have trust in the basics, you can go. Believe me, in these years electronics like radio's did not like seawater, that has never changed. You'd not be the first yacht to discover a dead radio onboard. Everything can be repaired, but can you do that? Oops. Often not, you need parts and tools and knowledge. So the radio is a certain risk. If Crowhurst were less afraid, he could leave without much doubts. To my humble opinion, his departure was an omen.

This not ment to be mean or sarcastic. But he sounds of a narcissist trying to justify his actions. The whole good vs evil. That being said i think he hoped off on a remote island and set the tenmouth electric adrift. Rather than admit defeat. I seriously doubt he'd kill himself. He loved himself too much.

I went to university in a coastal town. I spent quite a bit of time walking along the seafront, admiring the waves, and sometimes used to take a late walk after a night at the pub to sober up a bit. It was beautiful, but if I looked at it too long, it began to scare me. It could be merciless, and during rough weather the waves would crash into the seawall and the water would fly as high as the tops of the tall Victorian lampposts. The thought of being out there all alone for as long as Donald and the other sailors is even more terrifying.

17:05 John Eastwood smashing the champagne bottle by hand (a bad omen for sailors). John built the Teignmouth Electron, based on Donald’s design. The hatches were a major issue PRIOR to the voyage. There was a shortage of the soft rubber needed to create watertight seals. Donald never stood a chance.

I could have sympathy for Crowhurst but I have trouble with fraud. Alright, he had problems with the build, with the electronic systems and his failure to make it as far as the Southern Ocean. But reaching the falklands with little sailing experience on an experimental boat design. The immense stress and pressure to finish must have been overwhelming but there is no excuse to devise a plan to cheat. All the good will he built in his life was swept away by his fraud
@pauliebots
@pauliebots Ай бұрын
This day and age all he would have to do is admit his fraud and chalk it up to stress. In interviews he could just say he lost it. People would say hey did you hear about that guy who faked his votage? It's his story to tell and people would have paid handsomely for it.😂 Hey our next president will be a convicted felon, faking a race log?..out of the headlines in days..next!!

I've listened to this repeatedly while working in my shop and I consider Crowhurst a hero. He went for it. None of us know how we would respond in such a crazy predicament. Of course he should have turned for home and given his family their husband/father back regardless of financial consequences, but by that point he was clearly out of his gourd. And, not without good reason. What if he had read the Stanley Best contract and walked away, unwilling to take the risk? He would have lived the rest of his life probably in the same mediocrity that inspired him to pursue the race in the first place, wondering if he would have been the most famous man in the country had he shown more courage. I can relate to the way he was thinking in pursuing the race; on paper, his plan made sense. Raise funds via sponsorship and apply every form of the latest technology. The engineer brain works completely differently from that of the artist like Moitessier, but it takes all types to make the world work.

I watched this video many years ago. His words during the last days stuck with me. I got a sailboat and sailed from Canada to the Bahamas alone. I always think about his cosmic beings. I've been thru hell and always wondered what he meant by that. I think I know now. The only way you will know what I mean is by sailing. Sailing beyond the baths of all the western stars to realize.. This is no place to be unprepared. Moitiseir was right. If you do this for fame and glory you will only break your neck..

I don't really understand the compassion so many people feel for this man. To me, Donald was an arrogant, haughty man who, after realising he overestimated himself, turned into a conman. Then, pityful having to accept there was no way he would be able to convince people he was that 'hero' he so wanted to be, taking the cowards way out, leaving his family in grief and shame.....

This disaster was predictable long before Crowhurst ever set one foot on that leaky bucket. To launch into such a perilous journey on the merits of its own demands is risky enough, to do so with additional economic and reputational pressures that made turning back or asking for assistance a non-option was just _asking_ for trouble, and demonstrated exceptionally poor judgement by many who should have seen it and known better. IMO, this was abysmal decision making on such a breathtaking scale I’d nigh qualify it as an endeavor to suicide. I can’t help but feel Crowhurst knew he was departing on a journey of self-destruction _long_ before that eventuality was even in proximity. Absolute insanity.
