What i don't get why didn't Auckland Transport have hop cards back then or at least a year after we didn't receive them until 2012 and plus they definitely should have been Around for the big event the 2011 Rugby world cup Auckland central Transport are really slow 2003 to 20112 that is really slow just for hop cards to be invested for the public because 2003 those hop card machines should have allso been Around especially big event the 2011 Rugby world cup and today in 20024 they are still not on time light rail would have been a better option for Auckland Transport besides busses.

My Dad was in the rescue party at the Tangiwai Disaster and he was one of the first people there he was working at Kariori as a forestry worker and was something he never really talked about and once I was on a suburban train from Wellington and an older gentleman sat next told me his girlfriend was in the front carriage of the Tangiwai Disaster train very sad the last thing he remembered was when he kissed her good bye. I can't imagine what happened to her? very sad 😔

I owned a VHS copy of this documentary which sadly died on me a short while ago so I can't play it anymore. So naturally I'm glad to see it uploaded here so I can enjoy it again. This has always been my favourite of the Memory Line series, itself a fantastic series of productions, exploring and capturing NZ's Golden Era of Railways.

Thank you so much. It’s great to hear of your experience. A few years ago I copied all of my rail VHS to DVDs for safe keeping, and then recently I thought, why not make them available to everyone for posterity on KZfaq. I agree, the Memory Line series is amazing. All the production was way ahead of its time.

I haven’t been able to find that specific film. That aired in 2002 and I think it’s been superseded by very similar more recent docos. I was glad to have this episode of Heroes on my old VHS collection, even though it rides the (allegedly not entirely accurate) Cyril Ellis folklore.

In 2019, I took the Northern Explorer from Auckland to Wellington, a journey of over 11 hours. The overnight sleeper trains were long gone by then having been replaced by buses which are more flexible in their scheduling & seating capacity. There's an attached cafe car now negating the need for station stops (although the food leaves much to be desired. The trip is pretty relaxed... however I do have a few 'criticisms'. Firstly heading south via the Raurimu Spiral is underwhelming. I was in the observation car during the traversal, and I was left with the "was that it?" feeling. Secondly, food options in the cafe car are limited to prepackaged sandwiches, frozen pies, frozen meals (& barista coffee). Surely toasted sandwiches & local bakery pies aren't too much to ask for? Lastly there's no modern amenities such as power points of Wi-Fi. Given that the NIMT is out of range of cell reception most of the time, the only entertainment available is music (assuming you have enough phone charge) or a book...

Enjoyed that, first came accross New Zealand Railways in a book in the Local Library when I was about fourteen fifty six years ago. The family had just moved back to Glasgow in Scotland and The Remains of The N.B Loco Works were not far away. Many Early N.Z. Locos were built there, along with locos for Aus,Canada,India, etc. As a seventy year old who travelled by train in The UK as a kid before buses took over its easy to see NITR must have been something else to travel on. Bus,gets you there, but I for one am thankfull to get off !

Gary Farrow in 2007 I went on railcar excursion to hellensville and back but we were suppose to go on a steam train but yea it was fun. I wish there were excursions that would go until the end of the Nothernline like opua I mean have u seen off the rails the tv show with Mark something forgot his last name lol but yea rail goes right through the sandy beaches and through the middle of whangarei main town street man if that were possible to go on any train especially steam 1250, 1275 etc now that would be awesome.

Emmanuel Habtegabre Yeah, Off the Rails with Marcus Lush! I have been as far north as Whangarei on the line several times. The railway travels up the middle of the road in Kawakawa - a couple of times I got a heritage train from there to Opua. Hopefully someday soon they will restore that full route.
