I think that the Castro Theatre in San Francisco is one of the few remaining single-screen neighborhood theatres in the country.

I greatly miss my childhood experience of going to my neighborhood theatre and gazing up to the interplay of light and darkness dancing over my head. Digital projection has taken that away from me. You never know what you will miss until it is taken away. Saturday matinees with cartoons, double features, a Three Stooges short and a newsreel were things I took for granted.
