It's like the entire recording is inaudible, until you get to that chorus, and holy fuck... Kurt just breaks the barriers of sound. I always love recordings of this (& Molly's Lips) with Kurt screaming...

Probably a rack tom converted to a snare which was a common trick in the nineties for bands to do to get a deep snare sound.
