Thank you for this. We enjoy these videos because it's like you're in our living room with us! 2 questions. 1. What about rain? 2. How close do your 'trees' need to be and do you ever have trouble finding the right place to hang for the night?
@longdrinkmcg6 күн бұрын
For rain, I do have a rain fly. It's an eno made one as well, so it pairs with the hammock nicely. It's the same one I brought on the last trip. I didn't set it up for this video mostly because my hammock barely fits as is and it would block looking at it. For this setup I need the trees to be about 10-12 feet apart for comfort. My ramada is approx 8x8 feet as a reference. I have definitely had trouble finding a hang in the past, particularly in campground where the parks like to remove trees for openness. The nice thing is that you can get creative with where you tie the straps and you quickly learn what might and might not work. Overall though, it's typically extremely easy to find a decent spot. Or just cowboy camp if not haha

Have you tried a chameleon? I love mine and they are super customizable. I switched from the daisy chains to tree straps and whoopee slings and saved some weight
@longdrinkmcg6 күн бұрын
I haven't yet. Right now I have this junglenest and a couple of eno singles which I love. Very simple. The Helios straps that I switched to seem to be basically a tree strap/whoopee sling combo and are a nice weight savings over the Atlas chains straps I used before. It's still just nylon rope at the end of the day I think. Who makes the chameleon?
@ShaunLang4 күн бұрын
@@longdrinkmcg Dutchware makes the chameleon, its very customizable. I have a peak loft in mine. He also makes a lot of cool stuff for hanging things from the ridgeline.

Great review, Sir! Thanks for taking the time. I have had this pack (same color scheme) for about 15-18 years. It's a beast. Cozy, spacious, durable, but not lightweight. I love it, though. *subbed

Is this 56 liter or 5600 cubic inches?
@longdrinkmcg4 жыл бұрын
This pack was 5600 cubic inches, which translates to about 91 liters. Far too much pack for what I did with it, though it was though as nails to be sure.

Ninja Roll thanks! I’m looking at a used pack on Facebook marketplace and it’s tough to find specs since it’s discontinued but I did find an old link through kelty. Thanks again.

@@brucebruceky no problem at all! to be honest, I had to do a little digging myself to find the info. I had completely forgotten since I've been using a different pack for the past couple years. I had to shave that extra pack weight! The Redcloud is wicked trusty and tough, but at over 6 lbs, it was like transporting steel.

Fun to see you did a followup review. I watched a bunch of your AT vids last year and every so often I'm reminded of your early gear vid with your old Kelty, mostly because I'm currently rocking an old Dana Designs pack from around 2000. It's around 4 pounds but it's a fantastic pack in so many ways. It's refreshing to see folks use what they have and to remind others that while a lot of newer and lighter gear is nice, it's not absolutely essential. Also, for those who have an old pack that you didn't use that much but are looking for a new one, it's wise to use it until you get your other gear dialed in, then you'll have a much better idea as to what new pack would suit you best. All the best on your new trips, Alan.

Gonna be getting a few overnights in while she's getting her kit together and fine tuned. Not sure yet if it's be in 19 or 20, but we'll be out there for sure! I think we'll probably do an extended section of the AZT, just to give her a multi night with resupply to feel things out as well. It's very exciting!

Alan since you're near the AZT, I was hoping at some point maybe you could do a comparison of passage 11 the Santa Catania mountains versus the Pusch Ridge Wilderness bypass or hopefully someone who has done both can post a comparison. Thanks, liked the interview with John, good stuff.

rockymtuker I have done sections of both recently, and I would love to do that. To be honest, I didn't realize there was a bypass until very recently. I am editing a video right now which has some footage in the upper section of the bypass. I will definitely work on getting footage of both up. Thanks for mentioning it and for checking out the conversation with John!
