It’s your sidewalk so you can do what you want but if you read the specs for a mortar mix, that was way too thick. Mortars are only meant to be used as a “skim” topping. Lots of hairline cracking will probably result. If I had a rough concrete surface I wanted a little more finished looking, there’s nothing wrong with skimming a mortar mix over it but I wouldn’t do it ‘dry-pour’ style. Just mix up a small batch and skim it with a trowel. After it sets up a bit, give it a light broom finish. But that’s just me.

For your driveway how long do you plan on keeping it wet? Just dry-poured a back patio extension and still watering a few times per day, but not sure how long I should continue given it'll need to withstanding a pergola and lite foot traffic.

I appreciate your videos. I'm a single mom and have decided to tackle doing my own backyard landscaping with the help of my kids. I am dry pouring my pavers as well having watched several youtube videos. I thought it would be easy, but there's so much to learn. After having done it (I'm 3 pavers in), I realize it's trail and error. I've made a few mistakes, but I'm learning. I like the way your pavers came out, smooth and clean. My son has been a big help to me on this project. btw: he also has been training at an MMA gym. He's been doing jiu jitsu since 2nd grade. HS wrestler. I'm wondering if he thinks about concrete while grappling as well. lol. All the best. Thank you so much for your advice.

according to these experiments, dry pour without moist curing gets to 1000psi and dry pouring with moist curing gets to 2000psi. 2000psi is more than enough for patios, side walks, and shed foundations. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/hs2JiahpqqvDk58.html

I was just thinking about compacting the dry concrete when filling up the form, wondering if it would help. Then I see this video and I think ima give it a go! I've already got my patio that im gonna do set up with fill dirt and my gravel base. Next step for me is my forms and then the dry pour itself.

I did that without knowing it jaja. I had to fix a dry pour slab that the top layer went krispy crunch and i had to remove it. All because the air pockets getting to the surface. I let the under layer to vent out the air pockets and then throw the topping mix and now its fixed!!

Finally! Somebody realized water curing is necessary for ALL concrete work, wet or DRY. Also a properly wet cured pad will be darker gray then a wet pour like most contractors do today (pour and run). When I dry pour underneath houses for HVAC systems, I utilize HF moving blankets, cheap and "soakable". I also have run a piece of wood around the top of form with caulk, then "pond" it. Concrete will only take the amount of water it needs. Impressive you did research unlike so many others who just see and do.

Unfortunately air pockets made there way too the top,,I usually compact,,and vibrate or hit the sides with a rubber mallet or hammer to eliminate the air pockets as much as possible,,I actually just posted a video and did my dry pour a different way to solve that problem 🤙 let me know if you need any more advice to solve that problem 🤙

Latest thought on dry pour: what about wet/dry? Wet does have the best finish so… Dry pour up a slab about 1/2” short of form. Then mix up a Home Depot bucket or 2 of regular mixed concrete. Mist up the dry pour then dump the wet on top right away. Finish the wet pour normally w trowel, edge, cut in expansion joints. Go back to wetting hourly to get the whole thing to set up. Could give a great finish with the ease of dry pour (only extra thing you’d need are a couple of 5 gallon buckets…
@nedmorris97947 ай бұрын
IMO- Compacting - yes! 👍 Wetting middle - no :( Spalling problem seems to happen at first mist from under watering (too light). Need to hit it with a decent amount of water (1 or 2 passes w mister is not enough - will bubble). It needs to be completely misted a little deeper - like 5 or 6 passes of misting. Topping w mortar mix👍 Finish w steel trowel 👍 If it’s a thick slab, water for days (3) - you can’t overwater but it will get the whole thickness.

Try 1. Mortar mix on top (easy to smooth) 2. Use a steel trowel n dry mortar mix top and make glassy smooth After moisture finish ends up almost identical to commercial concrete finish! 👍

Intermittent drying and getting wet isn't so good. What you want is constantly staying wet. You can also cover it with plastic after soaking it down.

What I wonder about is the matter of consolidation. Would tamping dry concrete help? Concrete is somewhat like a sponge. It isn't normally waterproof. Water will pass through it. and it needs water and time. But why would a dry pour result in weaker concrete? What are all the reasons? I don't believe doing it dry could ever be as good as doing it wet, all other things considered, but it can be so much easier to do.
