Woohoo, I fixed it! It took me over an hour, and it's the first thing like this I've ever done, but your video was the best one on here. Your explanations were clear and the quality of the video made it possible to see every step very cleary. It's the one I watched that convinced me it was worth borrowing the torc bits from my neighbor and giving it a try - especially since it saved at least $150 if we'd paid a locksmith do it. He was going to charge $100 just to come over! Thank you very much for the time and effort you put into making this very helpful video. It's a great service. From a 76 yr old Geezer Girl

Live in Michigan where when it gets cold I had this problem. Watched videos similar to this and got it to work for a while, then it failed again. What I did solved the problem. I took off the small spring on that little piston and let gravity do its thing. Just saying, if you clean it up. NO oil, maybe graphite, but I didn't put anything on it. just made sure it was very clean. No problems whatsoever. Hang on to the spring in case, but I don't think you'll need it ever. Mines been off for 6 months.

Thank you so much for this in depth video. I had the same issue where when the weather would get cold my lock would stop functioning. Taking it apart now to inspect

Thanks I have found that stretching the spring out to bottom of the cavity is the best fix.

In mine, reseating the slide on the spring seemed to fix the problem until I reinstalled the inner plate. It seemed that the gray plastic slider was binding on the inner plate. Cleaning the ridge that the plastic slides on and then putting a small drop of ptfe oil on each raised rub point seemed to solve the problem.

499 comments! You would think Shlage would notice, and modify the design. Probably just needs a slightly weaker spring.

This Schlage lock is dangerous and cannot be trusted. Freezes in cold weather and is dangerous if the kids cannot open the door after the school bus drives away! The key is goofy too, terrible design. Junk!

My unit is not functioning the way your does in the video. It just keeps self-adjusting until it no longer engages. Goodbye Schlage, hello another brand.

The issue is actually caused by a low battery that is too weak to actuate the release. Batteries always put out reduced power in winter. I just change the battery at the start of each winter and don’t have the problem anymore. If you forget, it will remain you. You do need to hide your key outside for this very cold day!

We ended up exchanging this model for the slimmer version kzfaq.infoUgkx0jZ_lGlDVJhDnmagEU8gn47cmfPNlLQU because it was too wide for the only door trim area that made sense to mount it on. However, we should have just noted the dimensions prior to purchasing. Otherwise, we love the doorbell. It works perfectly, and the video is very clear, even at night.

I have the same problem, same lock. I called their customer service number, no one to pick up the phone. I sent them emails many time no one bother to reply. It's really shitty services. I can't open the Schlage lock to get out and in the house. It became a safety issue. Probably I order another lock from different brand name. There is no help from Schlage. And they stated lifetime warranty in mechanical problems.

Thank you, thank you! I've been fighting this problem for about five years. I figured it was because of cold weather and changing viscosity of the lubricant used during manufacture. Because of the partial engagement of the pin or pawl over that period, the six-pointed gear was wearing away at the edges. to allow the "J" shaped black plastic part to push the pin further into the gear, I used a utility knife with a new blade to shave some material off the top, flat part of the J and the top of that piece where the flat and curved part of the J meet, next to the spring housing. It made a noticeable difference in the how deep the pin/pawl could be pushed up. I don't use the key bypass function, so I was not concerned about the bypass cam wearing through the top, flat part of the J. seems to be working very well. Thanks again.

This has now happened to me way too much. In cold weather I got locked out. Nice that I now know how to fix it now, but frankly, I live in an area where, if it's that cold, I really, really, really don't want to be stranded outside. I don't want to overplay it, but here this is genuinly dangerous. And it seems to be an issue that happens way too much.

Thank you very much for your informative video. I fixed two of mine that I've been very frustrated with for a few months. It took about 30 minutes to take BOTH of them apart, clean and fix them so they work like new. You saved me over $250 so I didn't have to replace them. Additionally my pin had some contaminates on it so a good wipe down of the pin and cleaning of the hole seems to reduce the amount of pressure the spring needs to overcome. Kudos!

Thank you so much!! That solved the mystery issue with my door lock that's been going on for several months. The little engaging pin and spring on my lock were gummed up. I cleaned the pin and spring, then used a small dab of grease to keep it moving smoothly. The door works like it's new again!!
